Patricia Ann McCuaig

January 25th, 1949 - April 5th, 2021

What though the radiance which was once so bright. Be now for ever taken from my sight, though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find, strength in what remains behind. William Wordsworth

Biography

MCCUAIG, Patricia; January 25, 1949 – April 5, 2021. Passed away peacefully on Easter Monday with her family by her side following a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Loving wife to Frank Lizzotti, devoted mother to Jean Pierre, Deni, Tara and Bridget, Beloved grandmother to Cecilia and Sophia, and loving sister to Kerry and Ken McCuaig.  Patricia also leaves behind many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Patricia will join mother Rita Gallagher, father Lawrence McCuaig and sister Marine all of whom she cared for until their passing.

Patricia lived in several parts of  Waterloo Region, creating community connection wherever she went. She was a genuine nurturer, committed to supporting the needs of children, the disabled and elderly. A maternal figure to so many, Patricia was loving and selfless. Many in the community will have known her from her work at the Wellington Waterloo Airport and the Waterloo YMCA. In her leisure time, she and Frank spent summers on their boat in Grimsby, golfing and travelling. When at home, Patricia loved to tend to her award-winning gardens and hosting friends and family. She was a person of incredible taste, meticulously designing several homes. She will be remembered for her beauty, grace, benevolence and generous spirit.

True to character, Patricia asked that a celebration of life take place at a future date when COVID-19 dangers recede. In memoriam Patricia requested that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

“I know at times like this taking one day at a time can be a pretty tall order…maybe it will help to know I’m thinking of you. Just wanted you to know you’re being held close in thought and heart.”
These words are on the card that Patricia, my cousin, sent to me after my family’s tragedy eight years ago on Easter weekend. Patricia was always so thoughtful. Patricia’s card has remained on my kitchen counter for that eight years and continues to give me support.
May Patricia’s words provide support to you all, as well, as you celebrate Patricia’s life and mourn her loss on this past Easter weekend.

Dear Shelia, Wanted you to know that Patricia and I played the compilation of old videos from Aunt Pearl that you sent. It was during Patricia´s final days in hospital. Despite the drugs she was very engaged reminding me of the names of those I had forgotten. There were so many precious memories, such a beautiful gift!. It made her very happy, and I believe comforted her that she would be joining so many of the people she loved.

I often wondered if the stars in the night sky laugh at us humans. A peculiar thought to have when thinking of losing Patricia. Then this popped into my life:

"I don’t know where anyone goes after they take their last breath. One rather practical yet beautiful thought is to consider stardust. The human body is made up of water, proteins, fats, and mineral nutrients, which in turn consist of chemical elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen. These atom types were all created during a supernova explosion. Most of what we are made of was created inside stars and distributed by stellar winds into space as space dust. We came from the stars and now, perhaps, to the stars we return."

Of course. The stars laugh, not at us but with us because that’s what I remember most about Patricia, her laughter. We spent so much time laughing together. She was a star in life, no reason she’d stop being one now. So when you hear of the old woman laughing at the night sky, know I’m having a great Girls Night Out.

We were blessed to have Trish come into our lives 19 years ago when Lorne Miller introduced us & Trish agreed to babysit our son Hayden. Trish and Frank took Hayden (and us) into their home as one of their own. They quickly became close friends and Trish was someone I deeply looked up to. Everyone who knew her, knew she truly was an angel on this earth. She radiated compassion, love and empathy. Both Frank & Trish has a lasting impact on our family that will always remain. She loved deeply, and cared deeply for everyone in her life. A true role model for us all and we are so honoured to have had her in our lives. Love to Frank & all the family. This is a huge loss and I hope that knowing she is at peace provides some comfort. May her memory always be a blessing.
Love, Lorne, Melissa, Hayden & Eli

As soon as I found out I said a prayer to say thanks for having such a beautiful person as a cuz,and then it hit me-too early but time to get at least one garden ready for spring. It's only been a couple of days to recoup but it was worth it! Rest In Peace and don't forget to say howdy to the other souls that we are missing!

My heartfelt sympathies to Frank, Jean Pierre, Deni, Tara, Bridget, and the rest of Patricia's dear family. Patricia was a special woman and this is evident in all of the beautiful stories being shared about her. I am Patricia's first cousin, our dad's being brothers, and have looked up to her since I was a young girl. She was instantly engaging with her warmth and compassion for others and I recall being drawn to this. She loved deeply and unconditionally. I took notice of how Patricia cared for others and how she offered thoughtful insights and kindness. I am grateful for her influence in my own life and I hope that all of us in some way can emulate her spirit of giving and being present for others. Patricia, you will be missed by so many who love and adore you. My heart goes out to all of you as you try to cope with this enormous loss.
With love,
Heather

My girlfriend and I had a standing date Monday mornings at the Y for coffee, connecting and Zumba. It was a cherished time for us both and always a great start to the week. Patricia naturally became part of our morning routine, serving us coffee with a smile, often imparting some kernels of life wisdom, and sharing little bits about her life and passions. She became a natural extension of our time together. We were both saddened by the news of her passing, and felt compelled to share how small interactions with someone as gracious and lovely as Patricia can truly have BIG impacts. I know her sunshine will continue to brighten the lives of many ! Our hearts go out to all of her special people who must be experiencing such a loss at this time!

As I scroll through each of the comments left on this site by friends & family of Patricia, I find myself smiling as I share the same perceptions. Patricia left this earth inspiring those who crossed her path, with her acts of kindness, her compassion, her serenity, her genuine listening and her constant giving, always putting others ahead of herself. God needs an angel in heaven right now. That is the only way I can comprehend why Patricia was taken from us. Frank, Kerry, Ken, Tara, Bridget, Jean Pierre, Deni, Cecilia & Sophia, please accept our deepest condolences. I know how incredibly difficult this year has been for you all. How lucky my husband Ned & I are to have been Frank & Patricia's neighbours in Deer Ridge. Not only did we luck out having the best neighbours anyone could ever ask for but we got to marvel at Patricia's glorious garden creation every season. Patricia also looked after my youngest daughter Hanna when she was a toddler so that I could go back to work part-time. I have been so blessed to have known Patricia and to have spent time with her. I strive in my daily actions to be just a little more like her. The picture I am sharing is when Patricia, JP & I went to see Alessia Cara at Centre in the Square in Kitchener. I will miss my dear friend. I know she will send us all spiritual signs that she taught me years ago to be open to.

I have such fond memories of Patricia. When I spoke to her, it was like there was nobody else around. There was always this very slight pause before she would respond which I really admired.
It really inspired me to emulate that in my interactions with others. We had great laughs and I recall a round of golf with her and Frank one afternoon in which there were the 3 of us in one cart. What a wonderful day that was and truly captured her personality. Poor Frank! My sincere condolences to you all.

My beloved Aunt Patricia taught me many valuable things. Things about how to tend your family roots, about treating relationships like treasured gardens, about how to love. She graciously demonstrated how to show up for, care for, and honor others.

When I was a little girl my mom, Marine and I traveled from Seattle to Ontario for a visit and ended up staying for more than a year. Aunt Patricia stepped up and cared for me while my mom went into the city to work. Meanwhile she was also caring for her three children and juggling her own life. It was no surprise that when her daughter, Bridget had her twins Sophia and Cecelia, that they would all live together with Aunt Patricia and Frank, creating a very special and beautiful bond that few granddaughters and grandmothers get. When life became challenging, she was always there; caring for her mother for years; then her father; Johnny and his special needs, and her other children whenever they needed her; Frank as he was battling illness; her sister, on her deathbed; her brother, Kenny as he was recovering from medical issues, and so many others.

When my children were born, knowing how desperately I wished my mother could be with me, she traveled 2,500 miles immediately following each of their births and cared for me and my boys, and provided the motherly love I so craved, filling in holes. This is the sort of person she was. Caring for the graves, tending the flowers, frequently checking in with her nieces and nephews, especially after their mother passed, so they felt special, seen, and loved.

She maintained a meticulous house and space that was simultaneously awe-inspiring and inviting. Her energy was other worldly. She showered her loved ones with generosity in both material form and spirit. She embodied grace and had a calm tranquility about her – a knowingness about her that brought me such comfort. It brings great comfort today knowing how well cared for she was in her time of need by her daughters, granddaughters, sister, husband and others.

May her everlasting grace bring peace to her beloved family and friends as they mourn this great loss.

It is not unusual to describe the fight against cancer as courageous but no one to my knowledge has been as brave, yet as gracious, as my sister. I was overseas when she first told me she had weeks left. COVID restrictions made it impossible for me to leave Spain. Everyday I selfishly begged her not to leave me, to wait for me to make it home. She pursued an aggressive regime of treatment at great cost to herself. A three month prognosis turned into 12. There were good days. We took country drives and strolls on the paths outside her home. CNN kept us on top of the U.S. elections, as we shouted advice and admonitions at the computer screen. We welcomed the kindest of people from her life who delivered food, cuddly blankets and clothing, and tended to the garden. She never grew weary of thanking people for their kindness. Then she fell and broke her hip. Preparations for surgery revealed secondary tumours that treatments could not reach. An operation was out of the question. Despite what had to be horrible discomfort Patricia spent her final week, wrapping up her financial affairs, directing the distribution of mementos and writing cards or FaceTiming family and friends to say goodbye. She slipped into unconsciousness with her family holding on to her. I thanked her for being such a good sister, and apologized for not being better one to her. "If you weren't a great sister I don't remember it, so let it go," she said. Gracious and loving to her last breath, that was my sister Patricia.

My first memory of Patricia was when she and Marine came to visit in the late 1960s. To me, two intimidating, awesome, Amazonian women. My last memory was a talk we had at Marine's funeral, just short of 10 years ago. I have always enjoyed our talks, especially the few times I was able to come to her home to visit Aunt Rita. I was not aware of her illness but am not surprised by Kerry's comments. A kind generous woman who will be missed by all her family and friends.
