Hugh Foley

March 3rd, 1944 - November 9th, 2016

For Dad | Life is short but a legacy is long. The race is short but the stories are long. Certain are both pain and the finish line. Certain are both enduring love and the weight of it all. When a tree falls it takes awhile before the life drains out of it. The stronger the tree, the longer the time. When a man nears death, his strength is slowly pulled from him. The stronger the man, the longer the time. | By Erik Foley | Inspired by coach Dietrich Rose quote in Sports Illustrated on Dad's strength.

Biography

Hugh Miller Foley was born March 3, 1944 in Seattle, Washington to Edna Rose Foley and Hugh Miller. His father, Lieutenant Hugh Miller of the 169th Infantry Regiment, was killed in the Philippines during WW I when Hugh was six months old. Edna Rose and husband Tom Foley raised Hugh in Martin City, Montana with eight siblings. He attended Columbia Falls High School and then went onto Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. There he tried out for crew and the coach saw his potential and strongly suggested he needed to be at Philadelphia’s Vesper Rowing Club. Hugh transferred to Lasalle College in Philadelphia and started rowing at Vesper in 1963. He eventually qualified for their eight with coxswain which went to the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and won a gold medal.

In 1966, Hugh finished his education at LaSalle College earning a degree in accounting. In 1967, he met his wife-to-be Birgit Louise Okeson on a blind date and they were married August 23, 1968. They had two sons, Elias Joaquin and Erik Blair, in 1972 and 1974 respectively.

Hugh was the head rowing coach at Boston University from 1970 – 78 and was involved in team selection and training for the 1972 Olympic boats, plus various international races in 1974 and 1976. The family moved to Montana in 1978 where Hugh worked for Plum Creek Lumber in Human Resources and Production Supervision. The family enjoyed many years of hiking, biking, camping, and fishing in and around Glacier National Park.

In 1990, the family moved to Eugene, Oregon where Hugh became a licensed financial advisor with Ameriprise Financial. Hugh was active in Kiwanis, Foursquare Church, and most importantly as a grandfather to four grandchildren Athen Jones-Foley, Rainier Foley-DeFiore, Kailasa Foley-DeFiore, and Arthur Joaquin Foley.

Hugh passed away peacefully November 9th due to complications resulting from a ten year battle with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and their families.

The years at BU and beeing part of the crew team under Hughs wise and respectful guidance formed character and lead us to great experiances which last a lifetime. He tougt be personal exelence and attitude rather than words. Thanks a lot Hugh for believing in us.

Hugh was my first ever rowing coach at Vesper as a 15 year old junior in summer of 1970. What an inspiration. All one needed was a look over the megaphone to get us teenagers in line. And hosing us done in the boat while arriving at Vesper dock after a long hot evening . Hugh and his mustache are greatly missed

I was always impressed by his leadership and knowledge of rowing. I never really got to know him, i wish i had. He did say to me once while we were training and i was looking out of the boat not concentrating, to "stop bird watching". He had a sense of humor added to his distinct diciplined training style. We shall all miss.

I was thinking about my old coach, Hugh Foley, today and decided to search him out. Unfortunately, I learned he has passed on. What a man...what a coach. I rowed at BU 1970-74. His passion and leadership have impacted my life. It was not always easy or pleasant. During Spring break when other schools went to warmer climates, we did triple sessions on the Charles...in any kind of weather. He was an intense competitor. We rowed through ice, Nor'easters, and snowstorms. His work ethic build true character. On his desk were always little placards..."A diamond is a lump of coal that stuck with it." and, "Every punker has an excuse." He was an amazing man, and an amazing coach. Maybe that is why I am still rowing. Thank you, Coach Foley...your legacy lives on.

Hugh was defined more by his humanity than by his Olympic achievements. Every team member felt a special bond. He had great intuition and a huge heart. He stands next to my father in terms of impact on my life. I will always carry him with me as I will always be a part of the BU Crew community. Thank you Birgit and boys for taking care of him.

I had the privilege of working with Hugh in Montana. Hugh was honest, energetic, and and a great leader. The best!!!
But more importantly, Joyce and I had the opportunity to explore the wonders of Glacier National Park with Hugh, Birgit, and the Boys. Many fond memories of a cold beer at the end of a long hike, explaining to the Alberta Canada boarder patrol folks that Hugh was not a risk and should be admitted to Alberta, the rocking chairs on the porch at Freda's Tavern in Martin City, and six of us in one small cabin at Many Glacier waiting for the rain to stop before heading out on the trail for a long backpack in Glacier Park . Hugh will be greatly missed, but the memories of Hugh and his family will always be with us. May Hugh rest in peace.

I remember when I was a freshman on the freshman rowing team, beginning of the season I was a stroke. we were to have a 500 meter race with varsity, just an exercise, I told my teammates we are going to hit it on are you ready, to the varsity 8 surprise we beat them of coarse we had a head start. as to Foley's style he did not say we cheated, but gave the varsity a big workout. His memory will always be in my mind, will never forget him and his style

Coach Foley was absolutely the very best. I can still recall his arrival at BU during a very difficult time in our program. I can still feel the tremendous anticipation that we felt that we were finally going to have a coach of Olympian stature. He was a terrific guy and a wonderful coach and, as Jon Abramson has rightly said, a tremendous inspiration to us all. My sincere condolences to Birgit and to his entire family. May he rest in peace.
