Biography

Fred “Rod” Richard Rodriguez, 75, passed away at his home in Kearns, Utah from health complications unrelated to COVID-19. Fred was born in Brownsville, Texas, the second child of Alfonso and Virginia (née Tucker). After earning his diploma from Brownsville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in Vietnam as a scout dog handler, and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action. Rod found his calling as a locksmith due to his natural talent as a “safecracker” and his love of interacting with his customers, becoming a top national salesman for Glen’s Keys in Salt Lake City. In his spare time, he enjoyed writing, painting, woodworking, photography, and jewelry making, frequently selling his work at art festivals around Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. He is survived by his wife Linda; sons, Brandon and Douglas; grandchildren, Alaina, Evan, and Selena; sister, Delia Hatch; brother, Robert; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sisters, Thelvia Pace and Ginger Rodriguez, and brother, Michael Tucker. Rod donated his body to medical research at the University of Utah and will have military honors at a later time. Due to COVID concerns, a virtual memorial service will be held for Fred on October 17, 2021 at 5 p.m. MST using Zoom.

When I was 6 years old we went camping and fishing with Uncle Fred and Aunt Linda. I rode with Uncle Fred and Aunt Linda in the truck on the way to the campsite. It was over a two hour drive and when we arrived Uncle Fred told my parent that we needed to switch and have someone else ride with them on the way home. Apparenlty, Linda and I talked the whole way and he need some quiet. That same trip he let me use one of his fishing poles and I caught the most fish of anyone that entire trip. I know it was the help from Uncle Fred and my Dad that enabled me to catch the fish and not my six year old skills, but after that everyone wanted to use Uncle Fred's lucky fishing pole.
