Malcolm "Jasper" Phillips

January 15th, 1985 - May 30th, 2025
“Those we love never truly leave us; there are things that death cannot touch.”
Jasper, born January 15, 1985 and raised in Chicago, Illinois, a true Chicagoan, a city boy through and through. He grew up traveling around the world with his mother, living in Australia as a toddler, and took his first steps at the Taj Mahal hotel. Jasper was introduced to good food as a child, ordering sushi and pork chops at restaurants. He attended St. Ignatius High School, studied Chinese martial arts, got into computers, and became an avid bicycle guy.
Jasper went on to Miami University of Ohio where he became known as “that guy with the long hair that zooms through campus on his bike!” Of course, he met the love of his life, his baby wife, Jandra. After he graduated with a degree in Linguistics and Chinese, he lived in China for a time, moved to South Korea with his wife to teach English for a few years, backpacked through Europe together, spent months in Southeast Asia with Jandra’s family, worked odd jobs in Chicago, adopted their first baby, Boss the boxer, headed to Boston to get his Masters in Computational Linguistics at Brandeis University, and started his career as an AI engineer at Mitre Corp where he worked to the very end.
Somewhere between that timeline, Jasper and Jandra married in 2014 and they had 3 beautiful children together, Kiri, 10, Kai, 8, and Kalani, 5. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio to settle and raise their little happy family together.
What can we say about Jasper?
We can all agree that he was truly, the epitome of the phrase, one-of-a-kind.
His fashion choices were so unique and there were many versions of Jasper that it was only fitting his wife threw him a “Dress Like Jasper” birthday party last year.
He was also a real nerd at heart. He loved all things technology and geeky.
Jasper was an avid CrossFitter and was obsessed with joining all types of fitness competitions. He may have seemed like just a skinny guy, but he was actually strong af. Jasper was able to do things most people can’t even imagine themselves doing.
Also a car enthusiast, Jasper could identify the make and model of nearly any vehicle from just a glance. From his little Miati, to his loud, suped up Subaru Forester, you would find him under a car in the garage for hours. But nothing compared to his biggest marital gamble, his beloved pink Jeep!
He really was a man of many passions, but what he really is known for is his kindness, his gentle soul, his big, warm hugs and his genuine smile. He touched countless lives and inspired many as a great dad, devoted husband, a strong athlete with a brilliant brain.
In his last few years, Jasper found joy in the simplest moments, whether spending time with his family, or watching movies, maybe doing archery, or sitting around a bonfire with friends—he knew what was most important to him.
Jasper is survived by his wife, Jandra, his beautiful children, Kiri, Kai, and Kalani, his loving mother and stepfather, Anne and Davey Cunningham, in-laws Sokyun and Kim Nam, brother-in-law Rich, auntie Susan and uncle Peter van der Meulen, father and stepmother, Chris and Lori Phillips, siblings Duncan, Grace and Io, plus countless cousins, aunties, uncles, and friends.
Though Jasper’s time with us was far too short, his warmth and spirit will forever remain in our hearts. May his legacy inspire us to live with kindness and courage, as he so beautifully did.
Jasper, deeply missed but never forgotten.

Today marks one year. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 365 days without you here. A lot has happened, and I know you couldn’t be happier. Sometimes I catch myself looking for you when I go for a visit—either outside in the yard or in the garage working on something. You’re missed. We talk about you often, and I know you hear Jandra when she tells the kids, “No more potty talk at the table!” 😂 Your wife is remarkable, and your children are growing beautifully. Even though you’re not here with us physically, I know you have a front-row seat to it all. It’s officially Cedar Point season, and I’m so grateful we had our time there together. It remains one of my favorite memories. Today is heavy, but we’ll share our memories, celebrate your life, and keep pushing through. We love you, we miss you, and we carry you with us every day. Keep watching over us. 💛

How did Malcolm make an impact on your life?
I knew Jasper through work. Me, him, and Shaun would work closely on a project and meet up weekly to solve problems together. He was easy going, kind, and intelligent. We would pull through and get things done. Our meetings would often extend to chatting about whatever was going on in our lives. Jasper was the kind of person you hope to work with, we were lucky to have him. We're going to miss him a lot.

How did you meet Malcolm?
I met Jasper in college at Miami University. Before we got to know each other, I saw him whizzing around campus on his bike with a big smile on his face. I was so curious about who he was and what was making him smile. Then after getting to know him, through my friendship with Jandra, I truly realized what a joyful, unique, interesting and caring man he was. He had this quiet confidence and ease through which he moved through life. When you were around him, you couldn’t help but feel a litter lighter. I’ll never forget the time that our Miami crew threw a themed prom party our senior year. That year, Jasper and I were selected as Prom King and Queen. It was a silly thing, but I remember how much fun we had dancing and prancing through the night. As the years went by, I truly appreciated his listening ear and witty dad jokes. Every time I hung out with Jandra and Jasper, I remember thinking, “I hope I find a love like that.” Together with their kids, they have modeled what a healthy and happy family life can look like. So Jasper, thank you for showing us what it means to have a life well-lived. I will truly miss you! Sending Jandra, Kiri, Kai and Kalani all the love and strength to get through this difficult time.

I met Jandra and Jasper in 2010 through our mutual friend Adrienne, who informed me that they were the most adventurous, fun, and kind couple she knew. And this description quickly made sense after meeting them. They had just returned from a long stretch of traveling and were settling in Chicago a bit before the next big thing. This was a wonderful era of friendship and the two of them were the best package deal you could ask for - up for anything and so so inclusive and supportive. Over the next year we built countless memories and I feel so lucky that I got this time with Jasper and Jandra (and Boss!) during the time we overlapped in the same city. Shortly after they moved to Boston, I began renting an apartment owned by Anne and Davey, and I loved getting to know Jasper in the context of his family. Over the next 15 years, we remained in touch through visits to our respective cities, international trips, and friends' weddings. It was beautiful to watch the progression of Jasper's life with Jandra, and watch their family, community, and hobbies blossom. Jasper's Chicago community will miss him terribly. It is hard to believe we won't see him again for an annual reunion here, getting our kids together and catching up on the latest in each other's lives. Sending love, peace, and healing to Jandra, Kiri, Kai, Kalani, Anne, Davey, and all who are grieving the loss of dear Jasper. We will always hold him in our hearts and memories.

I was lucky to have met Jasper during Miami U. Jasper was truly a special human being - kind, funny, humble, and someone with a true sense of adventure and passion for life. It seems like yesterday I was walking into my first AAA meeting and moving into clawson hall. I was extremely shy back then, and was naturally drawn to Jasper, he seemed very friendly and also trying to find his way as well. We quickly hit it off, setting off years of good friendship, fun times, adventures around the world. One of the most precious memories was the months we spent together during a Miami study abroad program in Shanghai. These were definitely some of the most exciting and adventurous months of our college careers. I still remember good ole Jasper taking us down a steep and rugged hill in Thailand with some motorbikes, then us sliding down the hill and ending up in a ditch! Luckily we laughed off the scrapes and bruises over beers by the beach shortly after. Still remember that guy was completely unphased, while I personally have never been able to be the same on a motorbike! During college I was also very lucky to have known both Jandra and Jasper even before they started dating. I still remember Jandra liked sublimes Santeria like me - we both had it as our theme songs on MySpace - yes these were early days! I was lucky to see the blossoming of this relationship, these were 2 people which were truly made for each other. An amazing Miami merger story over the last 20 years. It was one of the highlights of my day watching all the social media updates with this family and the love they shared. Thank you Jandra for an amazing eulogy which truly touched me and reminded me on life priorities. What really resonated with me was the ‘don’t wait’ reminder. It is something most people don’t learn till it’s too late. Jasper lived his life full throttle, enjoying each precious moment, taking on new trips with the family, having that same passion for adventure even later in life. It is something many people lose sight with the daily hustle and bustle of life. As many have said, it is what others learn from which is what defines your legacy - this is what I have learned from Jasper - don’t take life for granted, don’t lose your passion in life, and take those you care about along for the ride. There is a saying in the Chan family, ‘thanks for the memories’ - thank you Jasper and you will be missed my friend.

But we celebrate life even in death, Jasper will always be looking over you and the kids for eternity, hopefully that can brighten our broken hearts.
