Souvenirs

Geraldine Rose Cassens, born in Oswego, NY on March 2, 1945 passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 15, 2022. Aged 77, she leaves behind her brother, Peter Pick, his wife, Margaret, her two beloved daughters, Kayci Browne and Cori Seyhoon, her son-in-law, Soroosh Seyhoon, and her grandchildren Maya, Kaz, Kaelan, Zayden, and Zealand. Her positivity and joyful spirit had a profound impact on all those she met. Geri was born in an internment camp for Jewish refugees in Oswego, NY, after her family had endured much hardship in Europe during World War II. They were eventually granted refuge by the US Government from an Italian concentration camp, but she was never able to meet her father, as he was killed before the family left for America, her mother made the journey pregnant with her and her young brother. Her family's incredible story is documented in the book and film "Haven" by Ruth Gruber. ( https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/171587.Haven ). As a child, growing up first in Newark, New Jersey and then in New York City, she enjoyed theater, dancing and singing at George Washington High School, where she met her best and lifelong sister Evi Bassoff. Geri's own mother, Anni Singer, helped instill a sense that she could accomplish anything, and she pursued academics at the highest level. Her love of math eventually led to a Statistics class in Behavioral Psychology, which set her on the path to a PhD in Neuropsychology from Tufts University in Boston, MA, where she met other dear friends who became family along the way. There, she organized an annual Thanksgiving for her young friends, which continues to this day. Her time in Boston, at Tufts and completing research at Harvard University were formative years in her professional development, which propelled her to eventually move with her two daughters to work at Hartford Hospital and the Institute of Living in Connecticut where she spearheaded the Neuropsychological Society of Connecticut and influenced the field for decades to come as a teacher, elite clinician with a private practice in both Connecticut and Cape Cod, MA. At home, she raised her two daughters with love, joy, travel and many, many parties at home. In more recent years, she loved being a 'Nana', creating fun activities for her grandchildren, watching soccer games, movies, playing games, eating out at her favorite seafood and French restaurants, and making her famous meatloaf or Goulash which always left smiles. She adored the sea, water or any lake and missed Cape Cod dearly after moving to Austin in 2018 after she retired. While she loved being close to Cori and the grandchildren, she felt like a "fish out of water" and craved more connection to her beloved East Coast upbringing. She was the absolute best mother, sister, friend, and Nana to her adoring grandchildren. She will be forever missed, but never forgotten as her spirit of joy and positivity will live on in all of us now. Following her wishes, her ashes will be spread at Gray's Beach in Yarmouth Port, Cape Cod, MA.

One of the sweetest, most lovely people I ever knew, it was my great luck to have known and loved Geri during our high school years. We lived around the corner from each other in Washington Heights and hung out on the "wall" on 161st St and Riverside Drive. We went to different high schools, but we were really soul mates, sometimes even cutting school together, going for walks and just hanging out. Listening and dancing to the do-wop music of the 50's and 60s - memories of youth that we still talked about all these years later. Those were such beautiful, formative times. It is so wonderful to read how Geri's positivity influenced so many other people along her path. It was a beautiful restart when we began writing and visiting again a few years ago and learning where our different journeys led us. She was so supportive of my current endeavors and writing emails frequently kept us both apprised of our current lives. We once met at an art gallery in Geneva with her family as we both happened to be there at the same time. Whenever I heard an old song from our past, it would give me great pleasure to send it her way and we could reminisce about those good old days. They really were good! I will miss knowing that Geri's beautiful spirit is not still wishing me the same happiness I wished for her - but perhaps it is... I will miss her.greatly.

So hard to see all these wonderful pictures of my fantastic friend! Geri and I had the fortune of being close from 2001 to present. She bought my house on Cape Cod and we just hit it off so well. We had many fun years together! We traveled a lot and got together each week for "dates"-dinner, listening to outdoor music, beach time, tours on Cape, etc. etc. The best time we had was when we went to Las Vegas. Geri I believe was going to have a knee replacement-I have fibromyalgia. We rented scooters to tour and both being clutzes, had some mishaps-but funny mishaps. I smashed into the back of an elevator with the scooter as we were learning to drive them. We were able to take them out on the streets and we were laughing so hard-we had the whole town laughing as we passed them. She was so happy to move to Texas by Cori and the boys and was always so happy to see Kayci and her kids whether it be in Switzerland or where ever! As we all know she was the most wonderful person-always happy, kind and understanding. I feel very fortunate to have had her as a friend all those years!!!!

Michael Fulco

From Michael Fulco I first met Geri in 1988, a couple of years after she came to Hartford to start the postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the Institute of Living. Her reputation grew each year, as she sponsored high-powered professional conferences and established a Neuropsychological Society in a state that had none. In later years, I sought her out as a mentor, since her depth of knowledge and experience had so impressed me, that I knew this was a person from whom I just had to learn. Over the course of that work, our relationship evolved into an enduring friendship. We had lots of laughs; she was a willing audience for my acerbic wit and shared her infectious good humor with zest. I miss her so much. Over the last few weeks, I have shared the news of Geri's passing with her colleagues and former students here in Hartford. All have expressed their condolences and their appreciation for her professionalism, dedication, and character. These are individuals who worked with Geri in the hospital setting and those whom she taught and trained. I would like to add that she is responsible for training some of the finest neuropsychologists in Connecticut. In this way, her legacy lives on.

When Geri first passed, it was impossible for me to write this. How do you compact a 50 year best friendship? Let me try. When Geri and I were first introduced by Brother Billy -- the 3rd member of our eventual posse who proclaimed Geri and I were a match made in heaven (except he didn't believe in heaven)-- both of our lives were too full for another person. We had beaus, graduate school and too many other friends to make room for each other. Luckily, our lives opened up at precisely the same time! Then, we shared everything: partying up a storm, life, advice, adventures, love and the empty chair at each other's table. I introduced Geri to her husband which pretty much alienated her mom from me forever. But just look at the beautiful and wonderful family that came from that union!! We were maids of honor at each other's wedding. Geri did the parenting thing first; I learned many parenting (I had my children when they were teenagers) and grandparenting skills from her. Above all, Geri was proud of and adored her family. Every time we talked or got together, she would extol the virtues of one or many of her progeny. We supported each other through career moves -- Geri was my best singing fan and advocate to the end. And we lived through health changes together. Funny how the clumsy, uncoordinated and sometimes devious senior body refuses to move like that of one's 20 year old self. We both hated exercise. When Geri moved to Austin, which was traumatic to me and possibly to her, too, but she never expressed it, we met-up three times a week on the phone and online to do a 10-minute exercise class for seniors. Seriously, we would chat for a while (usually longer than the class itself), put our phones down next to our computers, and do the online moves synchronously. Neither of us would have done it alone! We kept it going until each of us required different PT moves for different ailments. We missed each other's voices when we didn't chat for a few days. Now, I will forever miss hers. But my love for and memories of Geri and her beloved family will go on and on...

Dr. Cassens had supervised me when I was a post doctoral fellow at the Institute of Living (1995-1997). Typically, I met with her after I tested a child, teenager or adult. She would look at the data and right away have impressions. I would marvel at the rapidity of her thoughts and ideas. She easily answered questions on how she arrived at her conclusions. She often shared articles from her mentors on the Boston process approach. She was an inspiration as a supervisor. Gerri was always quite passionate about neuropsychology, had an amazing self-confidence and sought to help patients to maximize their recovery and students to reach their potential. I feel so blessed that I did my training with her. I remember her celebrating all of her post doctoral fellows in a small gathering at her house. She was truly thrilled for each of us and proud of our accomplishments. I am saddened for your loss. She was a remarkable woman with a big heart and personality and so much energy. I imagine her smile as I write this.
