Biografía

On Friday December 11, 2020, Margaret Elizabeth Ward of Wellfleet Massachusetts passed away at the age of 81.

Margaret was born in Brooklyn, New York to Francis Xavier and Agnes Bruton.  The second of four children, she grew up in Park Slope an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers before graduating from Salve Regina University with a Bachelor of Arts.  Over a career of 30 years, Margaret was a school teacher at PS 188 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan before running the New York City Afterschool Program during the latter part of her career.  After retiring to Wellfleet, Margaret established the Wellfleet Childcare Association and its Afterschool program and served as its first Principal.  She also was a successful and compassionate fundraiser for the Wellfleet Alzheimer’s Association.  It was an important part of her life and an important part of her contribution to her final home.

Margaret had an extraordinary devotion to children and it showed.  It didn’t matter where the child was from, if she could help them, she would help them. She also loved the New York Times crossword puzzle, the New York Yankees and New York Giants, Jeopardy, supporting Cape Cod artists, and spending time with her dog Ziggy.  Margaret was known for her strength of character, her love for her family, and her kind and compassionate spirit.

Margaret was preceded in death by her father Francis Xavier, her mother Agnes, her brother Frank, her husband Bill and her long-time companion Baillie.  She is survived by her son Sean, his wife Joyce; her sister Mary, her husband Jerry and their children Adam and Holly; her sister Ann, her husband Bob and their children Margaret, Elizabeth and Kathryn; her sister in law Peggy and her children FX, Meg, Courtney, Heather and Daniel, as well as family friend Milo and many nieces and nephews.

It's very sad to hear of Margaret's passing. I spent many (many!) afternoons at the 33 Schermerhorn residences with Sean and his family. Margaret really made me feel like I was part of the family. So many great memories.

I'll share two:

The annual trek to buy (and haul) a Christmas tree from an Atlantic Avenue vendor. I always looked forward to helping with the fun ritual.

I also fondly remember Margaret throwing cheese to the dog to rescue another High Schooler from the wrath of Spike. It always worked!

Margaret will remain strong in my memory forever. I wish the family the best in this difficult time.

My deepest condolences, Sean and Joyce. My fondest memories of Margaret include picking her up after school so that we could attend the soccer games you and Magnus were in at Friends Field and also of the chats we had when I stopped by your home many years ago. She truly was dedicated to her family and to educating children. Rest in peace, Margaret and God Bless your memory.

I will miss my Aunt Margaret so much. Aunt Margaret was the most kind and generous person you could ever know. Margaret was my godmother and when I had my first son Nick I call her and asked if she would be his godmother and of course she said yes. When I was little she was always there just like a second mother. I can never thank her enough for all she did for me. I have so many wonderful memories of holidays in Brooklyn and Stonybrook. I will always love her sense of family and sense of humor. Love you always ❤

Hi everyone, I wanted to let you all know that my mom's obituary will be printed in the Provincetown Banner and Cape Cod Times today, December 17 and the Provincetown Independent on December 24. It is also in the New York Times online site and Cape Cod Times online.

Update - Apparently the snow storm today has hampered delivery of the papers. The Provincetown Banner is being delivered tomorrow and I have an email out to the Cape Cod Times to confirm the same.

Margaret was known as aunt Margaret to me just like Bill was uncle Bill because truthfully they were both considered family and I was closer to them and loved them more then my blood uncles and aunts because they were a big part of my life and I’m so much better for it! Aunt Margaret I was so glad we got to spend a little time last Fall when we were bringing moms ashes up to the cape. You got to meet my daughter Sierra who instantly fell in love with you as well as Ziggy. We will cherish that afternoon with you forever and I will cherish all the times I ever spent with you and Bill and Sean of course (my Cuz). Aunt Margaret you will be missed dearly! Much strength and hugs to Sean and the whole extended family. Milo
