William J. Barker, Chaplain

George Block, Commanding Officer, USS William M. Wood (1957-1958) Dear Elizabeth, I have just been made aware of the loss of your beloved Husband George. As Chaplain of the USS WILLIAM M. WOOD Association, I want to take this moment to send you this note of love and encouragement on behalf of George’s shipmates and all of us on the Executive Board of the USS WOOD Association. We want to respectfully offer you our prayers and support. Elizabeth, I pray you will draw lasting strength from the knowledge that you do not have to face this challenge alone! You can face it with the strong assurance that George’s shipmates, and your God believe in you, love you, and are standing with you. The strongest rope is merely a group of individual twines bound together. It is in their unity they find their strength. Please remember Elizabeth, especially whenever doubt assails, that our precious Lord is always there, with you . . . all the time! Time and time again in His Word, He has pledged and demonstrated His faithfulness to those who are in need, alone, and suffering. That promise is yours this day. I encourage you to stand on that promise, and continually turn to Him on a daily basis (hourly if needed) to seek and accept His help, knowing that He is a God who never fails. Do you recall in the Old Testament, where the Prophet Isaiah wrote in Chapter 40 of that great old book, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. “He gives strength to the weary and increases power to the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; “But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31) Elizabeth, again on behalf of George’s shipm
