I have a number of stories I could tell you but will give you 2 stories I can recite about your Dad during my growing up years in Southaven MS. I went to Carraige Hills Baptist church with him and your grandparents and your Uncle Pat. Wendell (whom we all knew by his nickname at the time, Chubb, was always the life of the party in any gathering. He had an amazing singing voice (like brother Pat) and he could naturally sing harmony to anything as well as lead too…always on pitch…no AI needed!! I was in HIS singers with him and my brother Donmark and I were in the play Hello Dolly that he and Sheila West were the leads in (and both were amazingly good in their roles). A moment in time I will always remember is when the new band, Lynard Skinner came out with their first album “Pronounced” I was at Chubb’s house and he said he wanted to play me something cool. He put that record on…turned the volume on the big family stereo up to 11!!! And proceeded to dance around jumping up and over the furniture while signing along to Freebird at the top of his lungs while stroking Air Guitar along to the band. I had never heard anything like it …and I became an instant fan of that band!!! It is a super fun memory burned into my brain…the sound and the image of Chubb and his love for the music that he always had….second memory…I dated the Preachers daughter of our church, Susan Miller, at that time. She and I one night were in downtown Memphis by the river and met Chubb and his girlfriend Cecelia down there and had the first drink ever of us had ever had in our lives, a Tequila Sunrise…it was a night under the stars on the Mississippi River and as usual Chubb was the life of the party and made it a super fun night. Everyone loved your Dad and for good reason…life was “NEVER” boring when he was around and he loved on everyone and treated all with love and respect…he is missed by all who knew him. God bless you and your family….you will see him again on the other side. Below is a picture of Wendell and I with Francis McGuffey at a tribute party for her in 2019…she was our drama teacher and director and loved Wendell as we all did. Paul McCulloch

Well, I wasn’t going to share this but then I thought, this is about CHUB! Picture it, Southaven 1972, I was in the 8th grade and Chub was in the 9th. Chub had asked me to go to the sweetheart banquet at Carriage Hills Baptist Church. Don’t know why he asked me, but I sho nuff was tickled. It was my first date after all! And second of all it was Chub! If anyone remembers Eva McNemar, then you understand who I’m talking about, and if you didn’t know her, just ask any of my friends! They’ll be glad to tell ya! Anywho, I was so excited, I was going to get a new formal! But oh no, Eva Sue was going to have a dress made for me. 😩. She picked out an underlay of lavender satin something with an overlay of shimmering shinny material over the top. With long sleeve shimmering shinny material and the lavender and the shinny stuff into cuffs with a satin, something bow right under my bussoms! Now keep in mind this is 1972!!!! Well, Chub showed up in red pants, a navy suit coat and white shirt with a red, white and blue tie. Looking quite dapper I might add, I’ve looked through everyone of my picture albums trying to find that picture and have no clue where it went. Pictures were taken and she says, “have fun”, no time to be home was given! I think she wouldn’t have cared if he had brought me home at midnight! For the one and only reason was that it was Chub! I’ve always wondered what he thought of that old, ugly excuse of a formal! Actually, I don’t want to know!

hub took me to his band rehearsals. I took my gibson eb3 bass and his bass player was very patient with me when I was 10 ,11 years old. Wendell took me to my very first concert in uncle bobs work truck. It was the eagles hotel California tour at the mid south coliseum. I remember every detail. He wore those shorts he and pat wore all the time and flip flops. I smoked some of uncle bobs cigarettes on his dash. It was and still is one of my favorite memories. He cemented my love of music. I would sit in his bedroom and look at all the ticket stubs hof shows he saw. One of my Defining moments in my life was that concert watching I ons like don henley Glenn Frey and Joe walsh. Not too shabby for a first concert experience.

I’m not sure I have a single favorite memory of my Uncle Wendell, because every single time I got to see him was such a fun time. There wasn’t a day that I saw him that I didn’t leave smiling or laughing. There wasn’t a person on this Earth that loved Ole Miss more than Wendell, but the one thing that stuck out even more was how much he loved his family. One thing is for sure, I will FOREVER hear his voice yelling “WOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!” whenever I see fireworks and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Love ya, Uncle Wendell! HOTTY TODDY!
