On January 15, 2023, Warren Charles Sevander passed on to a better place at the age of 72. Warren was born on July 9, 1950, to his adoptive parents, Warner Sevander and Hazel (Ostwald) Sevander, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended high school in Mt. Prospect, Illinois (Prospect High School) and Chicago (Roosevelt High School), where he graduated in the class of 1968. Warren attended Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois, and ultimately earned his B.A. from Bethel College of St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1977.

Warren had a passion for the written and spoken word. He was a lifelong poet, authored three books of poetry, and performed at “Spoken-Word” venues throughout the U.S.A. for over 30 years. His verse was admired by friends and family and by all who frequented the venues of his poetry readings.   He was an avid music lover and very knowledgeable about the birth and evolution of Rock and Roll. He was known for his wit, infectious smile, and kind and compassionate spirit.

While living in the Twin Cities, Warren met and married the ‘woman of his dreams’, Linda Moss. Linda was Warren’s soul mate, and they shared their love and lifestyle until she passed with A.L.S. in 2005. During her last two years, Warren provided her with home care.

Following Linda’s death, Warren moved to Taiwan and was employed as an English Language Instructor at St. James’ Language Institute and at Columbia Consultants in Taichung. But, far more importantly, he was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, Preacher, and Bible study leader for the English language congregation at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Taichung. He confided that his time in Taiwan was one of the most rewarding events in his life. In 2018, Warren moved back to Los Alamos, New Mexico. He continued his poetry writing and reading with friends within the Los Alamos community until his death.

Warren was a man of God. His faith was central to his life’s philosophy and work. His faith defined and directed his goals and ambitions. In his life journey, he touched and enriched many lives through friendship. He leaves a blessed legacy of hope for those who knew him and whose lives were touched by him.

I had the privilege of knowing Warren Sevander but briefly, in Taichung, during one of the worst periods of my life. I was being a bit of a Jonah, i.e. refusing the call of the Lord. I had been raised Christian but went prodigal for many years. But the knowledge of the Lord was always within me, and Warren could see that. When I spoke to Warren, he could see that I would again become a believer even before I could, and he told me as much. I still remember him sitting at that cafe table where we spoke, I'll never forget it, this kindly elder dude with his white beard, nursing a pint of beer with notebooks and other books open. He was like Gandalf. Or maybe Gandalf was like him? But it was a stand-out moment in my life. A Dieu, Monsieur, Monseigneur. Heaven is richer now.

I first met Warren in graduate school in Green Bay Wisconsin in the late 1980s. We both moved to the Twin Cities around the same time, my wife was able to get a job for Warren at her company. Warren was a true friend, he shared deeply, his gift is certainly the spoken and written word, and I hope I will be able to put to music a few of his poems. As Warrren prepared to go to Taiwan, we connected and shared about his future. I was very happy for him that he had the appointments to teach and to preach as a lay minister while living in Taiwan. I remember sharing with him when he was deciding whether to stay in Taiwan, or return to the states in recent years. We shared out, intensively, exploring all that might be meaningful and making the decision. Retiring is a new chapter in life, and I had taken that ahead of Warrren. I have grief that Warren can no longer write or speak his poetry in person, his poetry covered many topics, and ran deep. I am grateful for perspectives Warren gave me on various topics, he is a part of me now that I reference, as we look out at the future for our country. I told him while he was in hospice that he had won his crown and run the race, in faith, hope and love. I am grateful to Warren for walking his life in faith and trust in God through Christ. I love you bro, but I know I’ll see you again on the other side of full eternity, Ever, Jack

Childhood Memory of Warren was his love for the Buffalo, a restaurant in Chicago, which made the BEST hot fudge sundae ever and was one of Warren’s favorite places!

Warren will definitely be missed. I was fortunate enough to see him on his last day. He was sleeping peacefully and that’s how I want to remember him. Rest in peace Warren.

I knew Warren during his Bethel days -- probably from Festival Choir, where I remember him as "big Warren" (vs. the other "little Warren"). I'm so grateful that we reconnected on Facebook. He would sometimes send me poems in progress, and we had a long, lovely phone conversation once too, where I learned we had both lost our spouses to ALS. I am sad to think of this world without him, but I know I will see him again in heaven.
