Wanda Jane O'Gorman Jewell
October 15th, 1946 - October 30th, 2022
October 15th, 1946 - October 30th, 2022
Wanda Jane O’Gorman Jewell passed away Sunday October 30th, at age 76. Wanda was born in Pampa Texas, to Leo and Gladys O’Gorman in 1946. She leaves behind her two sons, Kevin and Stephen, grandson Nathan, and her brothers Leo, Paul and David, and sister Jeanne.
Wanda lived most of her life in Los Angeles, California. She earned her Master’s degree in psychiatric social work from USC in 1987, and earned her PhD from Sanville Institute in 2008. She was a professor at USC for 25 years, and maintained a private therapy practice right up until the end of her life. In her private practice, she specialized in helping patients with substance abuse - Wanda was herself a recovering alcoholic of 39 years. She was very active in Alcoholics Anonymous through four decades.
Wanda loved to travel, and there were a few particular places she loved: Faria Beach in California where she camped first with her sons in the 70s and 80s, and very often later in life; Paris, France, where she visited later in life annually until the pandemic; Bishop, California where she camped with friends. Wanda sang folk music and played guitar all her life, and loved to play and sing at small venues and open mic nights.
Though raised Catholic, Wanda explored a wide variety of religious and spiritual traditions over the course of her life, and was particularly drawn to Native American traditions and Buddhism.

I was fortunate to have Professor Jewell as an Instructor for more than one class while attending the MSW program during 2003-2006. I remember her smile, calm presence, and sense of humor that could instantly put you at ease. One of my favorite memories was watching Yalom group therapy videos in one of her classes and laughing about the difference between theory and the reality of how it actually works with human beings in the real world. She was a wise, humble, genuinely curious, kind and gentle soul who taught us to see our clients and ourselves both as human beings in the room, and to always focus on the relationship as the primary intervention for healing. I know she made a positive impact on many lives, including mine.

Wanda left an indelible impression on my life and heart. I will always remember her positive spirit and wonderful support over the years. During the 1990's I assisted her in producing a concert fundraiser and an anniversary event for the Alcoholism Center for Women (ACW). She was a master at orchestrating these projects to their excellent and successful conclusions just as she was a master at so many endeavors in her life. May Wanda's bright light shine forever.

I just reviewed one of Wanda's online class again. I so wish I had known her. I have watched her presentations but was not been fortunate enough to meet her in person. I still learn from her when I find another talk she recorded. She must have been an amazing person. Susan Gonzales LCSW
