In loving Memory of Vid --

Vid Bhakar, beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, son-in-law and cousin, passed away from a stroke on July 30, 2021 at the age of 52. Vid was born on September 15th, 1968 in Brighton, Sussex, England to Carole and Balram Bhakar.

Vid was a patent attorney, litigator and partner at Squire, Patton and Boggs, in the Silicon Valley. He was known for his extensive experience in infringement litigation of computer-related technologies and for his care and mentoring of colleagues.

He was an exceptionally intelligent, funny and generous man. He was an avid reader (developed during his childhood time in Italy). He was admired for his thirst for knowledge and ability to contribute meaningfully to any topic. He shared his wonder and dared us to understand. He reminded us to laugh, stay calm, and keep fighting.

Vid grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, graduating from Vincent Massey Collegiate High School in 1986. He completed his B.S. in Entomology at the University of Minnesota with a minor in history in 1990, and gained his J.D. from William Mitchell Law School in St Paul in 1994. He lived in San Jose, California with his wife, Michell, since 1999.

He was most passionate about the history of warfare, politics, humor, adventure, food, cooking, animals, and connecting with people. He loved to entertain and brought us so much joy. He was generous to us, and cared for us and helped many others in their times of need.

Vid is survived by his wife, Michell Philips, his parents, Carole and Bal Bhakar, his sister Asha Bhakar and her husband and two sons, father-in-law Clinton Philips, sister-in-law Daleen Foster and her husband Mark and their grown children Talor Foster and Garat Foster, along with many dear cousins in Texas and India.

The family welcomes messages of condolences and any fond memories and photos of Vid you may like to share below.

Peace be with you, Vid. We will hold you in our hearts forever.

When I think of ska or tongue sausage, I think of Vid. Vid was my neighbor and friend in college, and I spent hours and hours at his nearby apartment for big dinners with friends or just to hang around. Vid was kind, funny, and generous. As others have mentioned, Vid seemed to know something about everything, and he had an infectious passion for learning. Vid introduced me to Syrdyk's blood and tongue sausage and to ska. The ska never took, but Vid's love for food rubbed off and when I try something new today I often think of Vid. The last time I saw Vid was at my wedding in Sioux Falls, where I also met Bal and Carole. My deepest condolences go out to Michelle, Bal, Carole, Asha, and the rest of Vid's family and friends. THe world was a kinder, funnier, better place because Vid was with us--he will be missed.

My condolences to Michell and the rest of Vid’s family on his loss. Vid was a strong advocate and a tough opponent in his successful IP litigation career. When he was away from the court work, he brought a friendly, high energy and enthusiasm to his colleagues, who were also his friends. He was interested in what you had to say and had interesting points to make in return. He always had a story to tell, and will be missed.

It has been decades since I last saw Vid, but I retain a vivid sense of his restless intelligence and his laugh. My condolences to Carole, Bal and Asha.

At a point in my life, Vid felt like family and a brother to me. He welcomed me as such in Sioux Falls and in San Jose, and I felt like home. What I feel is that Vid had a heart bigger than most people. At least bigger than mine. And he demonstrated this to me through his presence, his attention, his curiosity, his respect, his values and his extraordinary ability to please and cherish people around him. I have no shame to say that Vid was much more cultivated than me in many fields, and I do not say that as a matter of comparison, but as a tribute to him for his joy, enthusiasm and willingness to share and discuss with me and others. Like history and I read about it. Without any comparison to what Vid read and knew. As an example, I know about Napoleon and this period of time. Vid lived and breathed this historic character. There was not a day I didn't something from him. I had the pleasure to show him parts of Spain, corridas, tapas, landscape, culture, and I hope he enjoyed it, as much as I like his friendship. I am very sad, as Bal, Carole and Asha are immensely more. He was such a good man to my eyes, always smiling, ... always talking too. He knew what he wanted in life, he was very much of a type-A, and he performed and achieved. He inspired me and I am grateful to him.

What sad news. We were together in a Unitarian youth group in the 1980s. He had such a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humour.

I met Vid when he came home to Winnipeg for a summertime visit. Asha and I had been friends for a few years but Vid was already living away so we’d never met. Meeting him, Vid left the distinct impression that he was a thought-provoking and charismatic person. As well, being a dinner guest at the Bhakars’ firmly established my love for them as I watched them interact. Carole and Asha prepared the table. Bal chopped tomatoes and vegetables grown in the backyard. Vid prepared a salad dressing in a mason jar. I distinctly remember Vid’s enthusiastic selection of more spices to build flavour. I had never seen a family like the Bharkars! The image of a father and son cooking together in the kitchen was inspiring. The political discussion and family stories were delightful. Over the years, I have become deeply grateful for knowing all the Bhakars. They are a family full of character, curiosity, individuality, connection and generosity. I am so sorry for Vid’s passing and for your loss. He was a uniquely talented and giving person. Love you all so much.
