Dr. Charles T. Tuggle, III passed away in the early hours of December 29th, 2022, at the age of 40.  Dr. Tuggle, born on October 25th, 1982, and known as Ty to his family, friends, and colleagues, was the beloved husband of Vera; father of son Alexander and soon to be father of daughter Mila; son of Charles and Jean Tuggle of Memphis, TN; brother to William (Miranda) of Atlanta, GA and Mary (Russell) of New York, NY.

Dr. Tuggle, an accomplished scholar, was educated at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, and the University of Georgia, where he was awarded the Foundation Fellowship, UGA’s highest academic scholarship. After graduating Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and first in his class in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, he spent a year at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, where he mastered the Japanese language and fell in love with Japanese culture. Following this experience, Ty went to Yale Medical School, graduating with Honors, then completed his Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency at Yale New-Haven Hospital and a fellowship year in Reconstructive Hand Surgery at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. After decades long training, Ty began his career at LSU Health Sciences Center, where he was recently named an Associate Professor, with ambitions to build a world-class hand program in New Orleans, a city he quickly came to love.

With many specialty options as a plastic surgeon, Ty chose reconstructive hand surgery because of its surgical complexity and challenges, and because it allowed him to enable people who worked with their hands to regain their self-reliance, dignity, and worth. For Ty, there was a special beauty and purpose in restoring the functions of others’ hands through the labors of his own. He also loved children and took deep satisfaction in his congenital hand work at the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. Ty was born to be a surgeon following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Dr. Matthew Wood, and uncle, also Dr. Matthew Wood, both distinguished neurosurgeons.  Dr. Tuggle was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, a widely published medical author, and chosen for UGA’s 2020 class of “40 under 40.”

With his many accomplishments and bright future, Ty fought a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer. For eighteen months of this battle, he continued to use his surgical excellence to help those who needed him, returning to the Operating Room even after he himself had undergone brain surgery and throughout his chemotherapy treatments.  When asked why he continued to work long, hard hours instead of indulging his personal interests, he always answered that the meaning of life is to be found in the voluntary adoption of responsibility and for him that was to make others’ lives better.

Despite an all too brief life, Ty traveled widely, mastered Japanese, excelled at many of hand surgery’s most challenging procedures, loved his family, married the woman of his dreams, and lived and died with dignity. He is survived by a heartbroken but incredibly proud family.

There will be a service to celebrate and honor Ty’s life at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, January 7th, 2022 at Hardin Hall in the Memphis Botanic Gardens.

I was shocked today to learn of Ty’s passing. I was reminiscing with colleagues about a song in the late 90s called Crush by Jennifer Paige, and told them it was a reminder to me of my first crush - a guy named Ty that I met at the beach when I was 13 - our families were both staying at Hidden Dunes (or Tops’l) in Destin. Later in my college years, I googled him on a wild hair and bragged to friends about what a star my first crush was! Swimmer, Yale etc! At work today we thought it would be fun to see what he was up to these days which is how I discovered his recent passing. I never knew Ty past that beach trip, but today’s discovery has left me with an uncomfortable sadness. I have such a distinct memory of him - he left a lasting impression even at age 15. I really enjoyed learning about all of the amazing things he was able to accomplish in his life, and am so sad to know he leaves behind a young family. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who loved him, especially his wife and children. Rest in Peace Ty. Sincerely, MK Quinlan Birmingham, Alabama

We met in Kyoto in 2006. He loved Japan and I was interested in English. We talked about family, friends, and culture. We became very good friends. Visiting each other's homes is a fond memory now. (I think back and laugh with Mai, a friend we both knew. ) I have one regret… I told him that we could not be friend’s after we parted ways. When I heard about this sad news, I went to his favorite temple, Ryoanji and prayed for his peace. I am glad I met you. Your thoughts influenced my life and you were a special friend.

Ty was such a great guy. As my junior resident at Yale he was the one who knew his way around and always seemed like such a natural. He was so smooth and cool but also quirky and secretly quite a nerd. I have struggled with what to say especially in this context. I only wish he was around to continue to be such a light. He will be very missed by all who knew him.

"I Carry Your Heart With Me" by e.e. cummings i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) i am never without it (anywhere i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling) i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true) and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

I met Ty while at the University of Georgia. I can remember many occasions when we would just be watching TV and he would come down the apartment stairs to excitedly share something he had just read in a journal or textbook. In particular we both loved Japanese culture and travel, his positivity and curiosity were infectious. He always encouraged me to pursue Japanese and see the world. It's with a heavy heart I say goodbye to him, but I will always remember his positivity and joy he shared.
