And be the good Lord willing, we'll be talking to you real soon.

Thomas James Hunter — known to millions simply as Tommy, and to an entire nation as "Canada's Country Gentleman" — was one of the most beloved figures in the history of Canadian broadcasting and country music. Born on March 20, 1937, in London, Ontario, to a railroad worker's family, he was the kind of man whose warmth reached through a television screen and settled comfortably in the living rooms of three million Canadians every week. His story began at age nine, when Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys came to London. Something clicked that evening that could never be undone. Tommy took up guitar lessons almost immediately and was performing in churches, veterans hospitals, and between movie screenings before he turned ten. By his mid-teens he was a regular on CHML Radio's Main Street Jamboree and had left school at sixteen to pursue the only life he ever truly wanted. In 1956, Hunter joined CBC TV's Country Hoedown as a rhythm guitarist, beginning what would become a 36-year relationship with the network. His CBC Radio program launched in 1960 and moved to television in 1965, where The Tommy Hunter Show ran for 27 extraordinary years — one of the longest-running country music variety programs in North American television history. At its peak in the early 1970s, the show drew three million weekly Canadian viewers and, after syndication to The Nashville Network in 1983, reached as many as 75 million American homes. The list of artists who performed on its stage reads like a country music who's who: Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, Hank Snow, Kitty Wells, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and a fourteen-year-old Shania Twain making her television debut in 1979. What set Tommy apart was his deliberate insistence on dignity. He eschewed the barn-and-hay-bales aesthetic, preferring a polished presentation that treated country music — and its fans — with the respect he believed they deserved. He closed nearly every episode with the same warm farewell: "And be the good Lord willing, we'll be talking to you real soon." After CBC cancelled the show in 1992, Hunter continued touring with his band, The Travelling Men, performing roughly 70 concerts a year. He retired from live performance in 2012 following a farewell concert on his 75th birthday in London, Ontario. His honors included three Juno Awards, a Gemini Award, induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, membership in both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, and a street in his hometown bearing his name. Tommy Hunter passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, at age 89, in London, Ontario — his rescue dog and family members at his side. He is survived by his wife Shirley, three children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He leaves behind a legacy of grace, humility, and an abiding love for country music that shaped generations of Canadian artists.

To prove it was more than just a hill of beans, I needed some true bona fides, and for any country singer in Canada, that came from one place only: The Tommy Hunter Show. Thanks for your friendship Tommy—and all your wonderful performances. RIP.

Tommy and I became 'true' friends in 1976. I was invited to do a few shows each year and then invited yearly to be a part of his Christmas show. He even included my daughter Candace to be part of the happy occasion. I remember how many 'happy' times he discussed with me and his 'not so happy' times.

Tommy Hunter was neither flashy nor innovative but he understood his appeal and his audience and he was truly a significant country music legend.
