I've known Tom since he became a graduate student at CU Boulder. We eventually found out we both really liked games and eventually became roommates, in the infamous Fortress of Solitude (a cabin in the hills above Boulder). We had many adventures together, including the time we found the giant pig in what looked like a prepper compound in the nearby woods, and the time we boot skied down a glacier next to a huge field of wild flowers (Tom actually just had sneakers on, so it didn't work out so well for him). And played lots of games and drank lots of beer and sometimes bourbon. I still find it hard to believe I'll never get to do any of those things with him again, and miss him every day. His passing made me realize how isolated I've become as I grow older, and provoked me to try harder to reconnect with people.

Tom’s Remembrance As Tom and Jenny’s next door neighbors and friends, Marc and I have had a hard time processing Tom’s loss and hence it’s taken me awhile to post. It’s been so great reading all the stories about Tom from his wide circle of friends and extended family - poignant and funny and deep. An old soul. We’ve also been fortunate to be near Jenny in this time of grief and are thankful she has the support of so many of you, her friends and family. We’ve known Tom and Jenny for almost 5 years after they moved next door. We were thrilled to learn how much we had in common, from the places we’ve lived to the work we do, from our travel experiences and outdoor adventures to games, music and food. During COVID, we were together in a social bubble, meeting for drinks on their back deck or having dinner outside in our yard with blankets and laughter, good food and beer. We also had the pleasure of being introduced to the many cocktails Tom shook together in his shaker with my favorite being the Bee’s Knees while Marc enjoyed the fine scotch with generous pours. Last year, Tom and Jenny joined us on a Galapagos trip on a small catamaran with a group of our friends and it was so fun to see Tom’s joy as we snorkeled with schools of fish and penguins, walked among the seals, took an early morning zodiac ride to watch the sea turtles head back to the water, and as we marveled on the bow of the catamaran watching the dolphins swim along with the boat, Tom training his camera on everything and everyone...and the sunsets. Over the last few years, we’ve gone kayaking together, learned new games with Tom over dinner, chatted about all kinds of things from politics and philosophy to music and games. His endless knowledge was breathtaking and his love of teaching was infectious. We anticipated many more years. Alas, this was not to be. We were fortunate to spend Tom’s last night together with Jenny and our Galapagos bookclub friends talking about Zadie Smith’s the Fraud as well as Elvis references in a variety of song genres. And so we were heartbroken to learn that that was Tom’s last night on earth and thankful for those last hours of laughter, great food which Tom cooked, incisive conversation and warm feelings with friends. Marc and I have felt so lucky to have Jenny and Tom as neighbors and friends and Tom has left a big hole for both of us as well as so many in his circle. Tom, you are so missed!!!!

In 2000 or maybe 1999, Dave and I packed up the kids and took a road trip to St. Louis so me and the kids could meet Tom and Jenny! Tom showed the kids (and Dave and I) a great time. My kids still remember that trip!

When I think about Tom, I can hear his delight as he savored each bite of food. Here we are on our last night at a Maine lake house eating the much anticipated lobster roll. Tom loved great food!
