February 16th, 1952 - December 29th, 2025
Welcome to the virtual living memory wall and we encourage everyone to share quotes, pictures, or stories about Tom, as we know there are many!
Please also join us for a paddle out honoring Tom Davis followed by a Celebration of Life in his memory.
The ocean was a place of peace, joy, and meaning for Tom, and we invite friends and family to gather by the water to celebrate a life well lived. We’ll share a blessing together before heading into the water for a paddle out. Afterwards we will continue to celebrate, share memories, and enjoy good music.
Date: Sunday, March 15, 2026
Paddle out: 9:00 am at Dana Point Harbor Baby Beach for the blessing and paddle out
Celebration of life: 2:00pm at Los Molinos Brewery
We encourage all of those with small boats to bring them for the paddle out if possible as there maybe limited seats in the OC6s. If you would like to be out on the water, but do not feel up for paddling, please let us know as there will be limited space on power boats. If you prefer to stay on land we would love for you to join in for the blessing, the celebration of life, or both.

Just want to say how much I appreciate the Davis family and Tom’s guidance as my Novice coach a few years ago. What a legend. I signed up for my first Wild Buffalo race last year and was so nervous for the unknown. So many variables as a first-timer. Our team had yet to secure an escort boat and in a desperate hail mary I asked Lori if she knew anyone who might be available. She replied with, “Well, me and Tom would be glad to. We aren’t escorting anyone.” I couldn’t believe we scored that good. From that moment on I knew we’d be fine and the pride I felt knowing that they would be taking our team of rookies across the channel is something I won’t forget. Of course, Tom gave us so much shit for being overpacked and over-prepared and chose a line that no one else was on - even the lead boats came to see if we were ok because we were so far south, but he insisted we were on the best line and I didn’t doubt it for a second. As Rich said today, “we’ll take it from here” and we’ll think of you often, Tom. Stay salty. Mahalo, Emily & Craig Turner

A man of few words, but a life that spoke volumes. Strong in spirit, devoted to his family, and a true leader on and off the water. His wake will carry us forward. Aloha Greg & Sheila 🙏

I always knew Tom as “Grumpy Tom”, mostly because he didn’t approve of my excessive duct tape use when rigging canoes. My perception and understanding of him as a person completely changed when we spent about 20 minutes together on the skiff during practice. He started telling me about Wayno’s ex and how he made a song about it, and then proceeded to sing the whole thing. It was unexpected and hilarious, and I’ll never forget it.

Tom Davis was an awesome dude… I worked with Tom for many years at the Sheriff’s Department…. My goal was always trying to get Tom to laugh, which was at times a difficult task…. But I never saw Tom laugh so much as when I told him my wife (now EX-wife) had fed my dinner to the dog, after I had come home late….for some reason he thought that was hilarious, me not so much. ;) After we both retired, I kept telling Tom I wanted to meet him at Big Helyns (dive bar) for a beer or three…He always said, “Anytime”….Unfortunately, that never happened…. I know Tom loved his family, Dana Point Harbor, and his Outrigger Club…. The Sheriff’s Department was lucky to have Tom, he was an excellent worker, extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to what he did… I was lucky to have known and worked with him, Tom was a great guy….He will be sorely missed… God Bless the Davis Family at this difficult time… Frank J OCSD (retired)

This photo says it all(giggle, giggle) but in all honesty, Tom always had a big smile, a “hello “, a “smarty pant’s” /teasing remark which always made me laugh, and he always had great wisdom as a coach and teammate! U will be/and are missed Tom! Thanks for being you with US🤙🌊 💕, Natasha

From Gary Litten: Tom really was a special husband, father, and friend. If you were Lori he was your life long love. If you were Meg and Erin he was your dad, and he was always there for them. If you were his friend, he was a true friend. In my case he was my brother in law. We became fast friends. Over time Tom proved to be not just a great guy but extremely dependable, resourceful and always willing to jump in and help with almost any project and/or adventure. He also was a very good athlete. When Tom hit the milestone of 40 he and I decided to try Cross Country Skiing. We took a week, drove up to Truckee and surprised the Cross Country crowd at the upscale lodge close to Lake Tahoe. Upon taking a horse drawn sleigh ride (blanket of course to put over our laps) we were delivered to the “euro” style lodge and proceeded to 3 times a day, take a class from 2 Norwegian young female instructors, who you could not have typed better, blond, tall, thin and seemed to glide over the snow. Well you can imagine, getting 2 middle aged guys, not wanting to appear weak and trying to stay up with the instructors. In the evenings we had to hit the hot tub, having covered over 15 miles and very sore. This necessitated imbibing in the lodge's beer supplies (everyone else was drinking wine). Picture this idyllic setting in an upscale lodge, fire going and 2 wrecked guys at the end of every day. We were told we set the record for beer drinking as they had to make 2 trips over 4 days to get more beer. If you knew Tom well, you would know he had a very dry sense of humor. Every night he kept the party going with people gathered around and running through the lodge's beer. Get a couple of drinks into Tom and he was funny! Tom was also a cat with 9 lives. The incidents I know of go from diving in the surf and breaking his neck, to running a skill saw up his leg, and putting a nail in his knee with a nail gun. He always took these things in stride. Given his background in construction he really was a go to, for advice and was there to help out. Tom and Lori have spent many years supporting the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club. With Tom’s passion for competition and the water, what better tribute than a paddle out. I am so grateful to have known Tom Davis, and have so many great memories. He brought so much joy to everyone. Tom-Aloha Sturdy canoe, a gentle breeze, You glide now on celestial seas. No more to struggle, no more to roam, The ocean finally brings you home. Aloha Ole Gary
