Dear friends, patients, and community members of Coeur d’ Alene Healing Arts:

Welcome to Dr. Todd Schlapfer’s memorial page. Throughout his career, Dr. Todd touched countless lives and ignited healing and learning in each of us through his dedication as a naturopathic physician, teaching the art and science of healing.

Losing someone so lovely, kind, and authentic who so generously shared his presence and wisdom, brings me great sadness. His physical presence is deeply missed. Yet the legacy of self-knowing he left through the connection that each of us felt in his presence continues to be nurtured in each of us.

Of the many gifts and teachings Dr. Todd shared with me, one was the power of finding meaning in the face of grief. The term he chose to describe this powerful way to engage the grieving process is to offer merit. By honoring and articulating the way a deceased loved one shaped who we are and helped us understand ourselves and our relationship with the world around us, we are able to connect to meaning in the midst of loss. In this way Dr. Todd is connected to each of us in this moment and always, reverberating outward into the world infinitely as we live into the self-truths he helped each of witness.

I invite you to use this space to offer merit to Dr. Todd. In sharing the unique meaning in life we each found in our precious time with Dr. Todd, this community space can nurture the warm embrace of connectedness with Dr. Todd, and also with each other. I know he would honor and bless such an intentional space for love and healing in the community he so cherished.

Memories, stories, insights, learnings, feelings, and all things Dr. Todd are welcome.

Todd was different than anyone else I have known. You could feel the difference almost instantaneously when in his presence. It was felt - in the way he smiled and greeted me each day when I arrived at work. - in the way he would hold space to explain the complexity of the body. - in the way he interacted with each human who stepped into his office. - in the way he said goodbye to each patient. With a sparkle in his eye and a gentle smile, his whole being said “I see you.” He brought out the best in everyone with his exquisite ability to trust. The level of trust he gave is considered dangerous in our current society and I imagine he paid a price for that radical trust in some areas of his life. But his embodiment of the trust was positively infectious. For me it was transformative. Never had I worked for someone who trusted like that. Trusted in humanity… trusted in me… trusted in the healing power of nature. If the schedule ever had gaps, Todd was not questioning why. He was not peering over my shoulder to make sure I was doing my job right. He was not hustling ideas on how to market his business better. He would instead come out and say the time and space were a gift that allowed him to reach out to patients he had been thinking about. He would come out, grab their charts, and either begin writing an e-mail or calling them directly to say hello. Often he would arrive in the morning and hand me a handwritten list of patients. He would ask me to reach out to each person on the list to check in and see how they were doing. They were patients who had come to him either in a dream or had popped into his mind on the way to work. Often when I called the patients they would be blown away because they had just experienced a difficult life matter and had been thinking about Todd and were needing his guidance. There was so much fluidity in the work of helping Todd’s patients. I loved being in service to and in witness of the intuitive moments; there were countless. Rather than a matrix of systems, it felt like the clinic was a conduit of healing energy and my job keeping the channels open – to help the communication flow. Todd taught me how to ask the right questions, how to distill the information, and ultimately how to see the larger health picture that was unfolding. By doing so, I could better translate the patient’s questions and he/we would then be able to give helpful guidance. When in that flow, the healing work would continue post consult. At the end of every morning (the start of a 2-hour lunch break) I would go into Todd’s office to review patient questions, changes to the schedule, updates etc. Each patient’s question sparked a larger philosophical discussion or in-depth training on how the body and energy systems work. He wanted me to understand the “why” of every response so I could partake in a more in-depth discussion with every patient I was calling back. Usually, I would be so excited about what I was learning during those sit-down discussions that I would go home at the end of the day and research further information on the “why” of what we were doing. Todd was always there inspiring my curiosity about our inner and outer nature. He was a true teacher. After I was initially hired on at the clinic, it didn't take long for me to notice the contrast of our patient's demeanor from arrival to departure. When they walked out of Todd’s office, they carried themselves differently, they communicated differently, they moved through the world differently. There was a sweetness and grace that returned. It’s as if Todd had reorganized their energy body in a way where time itself had changed for them. It is hard for me to imagine this world without Todd in it. His presence made a significant imprint on me as a person, and I now feel a great responsibility to keep the conduit open – to continue the healing work within myself and also in the healing work and service of my life. I will end with this sweet message I captured from a card Todd wrote to a patient many years ago while giving his condolences to their loss of a loved one. I’m not sure if he wrote it or if it was inspired by other writings… but it feels right to share today. HOMAGE TO THIS BODY Homage to this body, this cosmos of cells Spun into a galaxy of blood, bones, muscle, and skin This heart-sun and moon-mind Homage to the spirit that animates us To the shree that enlivens us To the imagining that recreates us Homage to what opens us to the next Homage to this day, to yesterday, the future and its return

I was a 25 yr old Naturopathic student with pneumonia. Todd was a 'student doctor'. He tended to me every day, with hydrotherapy and homeopathics. I predicted the time of my death, he gave me Aconite, my symptoms cleared in less than a minute. I was given miasmatic remedies (Tub and Carcinosin) and that was pivotal in changing the course of my susceptibility to bronchiole issues. The experience has transformed the lives of my lifetime of patients through one experience with this caring and daring young Naturopath. As the years went on, there was an unspoken knowledge between us in how we valued this experience. The love that he always showed was amplified in his last years when all, even subtle, superficiality of our lives fades away and there is nothing but deep truth to face.

The word that comes up for me when thinking about Todd is "Trust." He was a 'man' I could trust and he turned me towards myself to start the process of trusting myself. To this day, I feel empowered to heal myself by bringing all of myself present and convening. He taught me this. When I heard he had passed, I was struggling with an old issue and I remembered the remedy he said was my constitutional. As if he was gently guiding me from above, I went to my homeopthic remedy box I still have from all these years ago and pulled it out. I took the remedy as he instructed me to long ago and things started to shift back to balance. As I write this I am experiencing how deeply he cultivated in me the knowing that healing is about the whole person, mental, emotional and physical. I regret all the years I missed being around him. I am grateful for his presence now. In deepest gratitude that my path crossed his for the many years it did. He is a GREAT SOUL. Namaste

Dr.Todd's ability to be present and maintain heart-centered focus created a safe space to be vulnerable, to share deeply, to grieve, to ask why, to express frustration and to celebrate the large and small victories, and be truly heard. Todd created a place for healing that was free of judgment and filled with the kind of support and loving kindness and depth of knowledge that I'd not experienced before, but continue to find in Dr.Hunter's practice. Beautiful legacy, Todd. Grateful for you!

I started seeing Dr. Todd in the late 80's. He said such profound things, they rang so true to me. One visit I fought back tears. He asked me why. I said I didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable. He then said, "I'm responsible for my own feelings, you do yours however you like". WOW - I didn't have to take care of someone else!!! I think it was the first time I experienced that. Another time a few years later the word was out and his waiting room was much busier. I remarked about that as I went into his office. His reply, "Yes, but when this door closes, it's just you and me as always". As a young Mom of 3 sons, it felt like a sanctuary for me. He was a true healer. I am blessed to have known him. Much love, Ginna
