Timothy Henry Gibbs
June 6th, 1954 - December 27th, 2020
June 6th, 1954 - December 27th, 2020
DRAFT With great sadness, we share the news that Tim Gibbs passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at his home in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Lovingly remembered by his sons Matias, Lucas and Nico and their mother, Gabriela, his father, Henry, sisters Sue (Peter) and Diana, nieces and nephews and his wide-ranging circle of friends. Tim brought his remarkable intelligence, vision and great sense of humour Growing up in Toronto, Tim formed life-long friendships at North Toronto Collegiate and University of Western Business School before launching a successful career in banking which took him first to New York and Venezuela and finally to Argentina where he settled in 1983 and completely took root. "Who doesn't remember him galloping wildly on horseback? Dressed as a gaucho, or fly fishing in our Patagonia, or preparing a million asados like the most native parrillero, while drinking a mate, and occasionally a few glasses of wine". said his good friend Nico Carlisle. His professional trajectory was as varied as it was successful. He led teams in JP Morgan, Buenos Aires Capital Partners, Banco Rio, Citibank, where he co-founded a local investment bank, Buenos Aires Capital Partners, then later was contracted by the group Perez Company to lead the acquisition process and later was the director of Citibank in Argentina. After many years, he left the financial world switching course to serve as headmaster at a private school three years. Tim was a natural leader and took a strong interest in the social, political and educational issues of his adopted country, co-founding a charity that promoted education for rural youth and a non-partisan political network dedicated to building consensus and democratic institutions. Settling in Uruguay these last few years, Tim cast his sights to the night sky where he took up astrophotography with a passion and had recently embarked on a project to build an observatory in Uruguay. He was an example of strength in adversity, grappling with a leg that tormented him and stole from him both movement and quality of life. Curious, restless, funny, intelligent and pragmatic, Tim was a "cosmic shambler" who looked towards the life universe with awe and wonder. Remembered with love, he will be deeply missed.
