The past dozen years have taught me that being a vagabond is not defined by distance travelled or the many places I've called home. A vagabond looks upon the world as a field of potential and possibility, where beauty can be not just found but created, and adventure awaits any and all who are willing to seek it out.

Timothy James Curry was born on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England — and for the next eight decades, he would prove himself one of the most fearless, original, and utterly irreplaceable performers that the stage and screen have ever known. His father, Jim Curry, a Methodist Royal Navy chaplain, and his mother, Maura Patricia Langmead, had met in Malta during the Second World War and married in Egypt. Within a year of Tim's birth, the family was posted to Hong Kong, beginning an itinerant childhood that gave young Curry a traveller's eye for people, places, and the magnificent strangeness of human behaviour. When his father died of a stroke in 1958, the family settled first in Plymouth, then South London — and Tim, the boy who had grown up everywhere at once, quietly began to find his footing on a stage. He boarded at Kingswood School in Bath before studying Drama and English at the University of Birmingham from 1965 to 1968, though by his own admission, the extra-curricular acting mattered far more than the lectures. He talked his way into the original West End cast of Hair in 1968 — telling a small but productive lie about already holding an Equity card — and there he met Richard O'Brien. That meeting would change everything. In 1973, O'Brien cast Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs. It was, in the fullest sense of the word, a phenomenon. The role transferred to grander venues, crossed the Atlantic, and in 1975 became The Rocky Horror Picture Show — a film that has never stopped screening, a cult classic that turned Tim Curry into an immortal of popular culture. Yet Curry refused to be defined by a single corset. His career spanned five decades and encompassed Shakespeare, Broadway, the National Theatre, voice acting, and some of cinema's most deliciously villainous performances. He earned three Tony Award nominations — for Amadeus (1981), My Favorite Year (1993), and Spamalot (2005) — and terrified a generation as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's It. He won a Daytime Emmy for voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan & the Pirates and lent his magnificent baritone to characters across animation and audiobooks, from Nigel Thornberry to Chancellor Palpatine. On July 13, 2012, Curry suffered a severe stroke at his Los Angeles home. He survived — through remarkable medical care and his own extraordinary resilience — and continued working, making fan appearances from his wheelchair, and in 2025 publishing his memoir, Vagabond, which became a New York Times bestseller. Nicknamed "The Cheshire Cat" for his bright eyes and knowing grin, he believed, above all else, that "risky is the best way to be." Tim Curry died peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, on August 25, 2026. He was 80. He left no survivors in the conventional sense — he never married and had no children — but he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: generations of fans he gave, as he once put it, "permission to be different."

How did you meet Tim?

I was Tim’s assistant stage manager when he did Spamalot in London and he was the most down to earth, at times stubborn, with the filthiest sense of humour that you could ever wish to hear I’ll always remember his final performance in London of his ad-libbing Jump for your king, boys. It’s the last time And reducing the entire audience to tears, as well as most of the crew during I’m all alone

We had such a wonderful time working together on 'Annie.' Nobody could play lovable villains better than he could. He was a dear friend. I was blessed to know him.
