The Life and Legacy of Prince Thomas Ilori Oke: A Trailblazer, Mentor, and Patriarch

We are profoundly honored to celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of our beloved father, mentor, and patriarch, Prince Thomas Ilori Oke.

Prince Oke was an accomplished agriculturalist and a distinguished research farm manager whose illustrious career spanned decades of excellence, dedication, and innovation. His journey began with a strong foundation in education. He attended Christ School, Ado-Ekiti for his secondary studies, where his brilliance and tenacity began to take shape. He furthered his studies at the School of Agriculture, Akure, where he not only excelled as a student but later served as a teacher, imparting knowledge and inspiring others. It was during this time that his exceptional potential and diligence earned him a prestigious scholarship to study in the United States, a pivotal opportunity that marked the beginning of his impactful international academic and professional journey.

Prince Oke became an alumnus of the renowned University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he gained both academic distinction and widespread social recognition. Fondly nicknamed "Oke for Social", he was celebrated for his remarkable football skills, charismatic personality, and dynamic interactions. This period of his life highlighted his ability to connect with people and build lasting relationships, qualities that would become hallmarks of his leadership style. He continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin, USA, where his global exposure and education further shaped his groundbreaking contributions to agriculture.

Prince Oke’s professional career was marked by vision and achievement. He served as the Farm Manager at the University of Ife before being appointed Director of the Teaching and Research Farm at the University of Ibadan. For over 30 years, he blazed a trail of innovation, leadership, and excellence, contributing immensely to agricultural education and research. His dedication and pioneering spirit earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, students, and the broader academic community, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.

Despite the demands of his professional career, Special Venerable, Most Senior Evangelist Pa Tommy Oke’s devotion to God and his passion for music remained unwavering. He joined the Celestial Church of Christ in the early 1970s and quickly distinguished himself as one of the pioneer choirmasters of the church. For 25 years, he led the Celestial Church of Christ, Mokola Parish Choir, nurturing talents and fostering an environment where renowned gospel artists and music legends emerged, including the late Dr. Oluwole Adetiran (Music Director, CCC Worldwide), Evangelist Remi Olabamiji, and the late Bayo Adegboyega (Atayero), among many others. Under his leadership, over 40 gospel albums were produced, spreading the gospel through music to far-reaching corners of the world.

His contributions extended to the establishment of the award-winning Central Choir Group, where he served as the first choir director of the Oyo State Central Choir. His exceptional administrative skills, visionary leadership, and steadfast commitment to excellence redefined the church’s music ministry, elevating it to unparalleled heights. Through his stewardship, countless local and international gospel artists rose to prominence, sharing the message of Christ and uplifting lives through music.

As a crowning achievement of his lifelong dedication, Prince Oke established the Prince Thomas Ilori Oke Foundation on his 87th birthday. This visionary initiative birthed the first-ever Choirmaster Academy in Africa, a centre of excellence dedicated to training and empowering choir leaders to achieve remarkable success in their ministries. This academy stands as a lasting testament to his vision, ensuring that future generations are equipped to continue his legacy of excellence in gospel music.

Prince Oke lived a life of purpose, faith, and fulfilment, embodying the virtues of service, mentorship, and excellence.
