Theodor Adohi (Forest) Giles left us on November 27, 2022. His loving sister, mother and father survive him along with one grandmother, one grandfather, many aunts, uncle's, cousins and step-family. At only 21 years, his family, friends, mentors and allies severely mourn our loss!!! As a Ford Family Foundation Scholar, he was working hard in his fourth year at Oregon Institute of Technology toward an Environmental Engineering degree; was the OIT Robotics president, led the NASA sponsored RoboSub team, led programs for the Student Sustainability Committee, DJ'd Monday nights with KYEC on campus and has brotherhood with Phi Delta Theta #355. His complete appreciation for our living planet carries us through with his eloquent words and works. His cherished kindness and love for family, friends, mentors and all of Earth's creatures and systems will eternally be shared by all who witnessed his love. A celebration of life will be held on Spring Equinox March 20, 2022 at 10am in the forest of the Little White Salmon Biodiversity Reserve. During this long winter, we gather here to share stories and love for Theodor. Seed tributes are being gathered for his Spring garden. "All the little pieces of life, from the Sanborn's Beewolf to our own Great Pyrenees Osmo, have a precious mantle to take up in this world. Why is it that many of us live like these systems don't exist? Living in complete darkness from our gorgeous, vibrant, and paradisal puzzle we call Earth will get us nowhere. Take some time to understand the systems around you. Trust me, it's worth it. Love one another" TG

Kandy, thank you for bringing us together at this, the coldest and darkest Winter Solstice I've known. I wanted to write most of what I said at the gathering and leave if for you here. Kandy, every moment of your children and grandchild's life, the depth and breadth of your love for each of them has been absolutely unquestionable. Theodor knew it in his bones. I first met Ted, Fred, Theodor when he was eight years old. We got to watch him grow into a man that was like his mother in so many beautiful ways. Even as a kid, Ted was at ease with everyone, and he put everyone around him at ease. He made other children and adults feel interesting and likeable. He shared his ideas and asked others about theirs. He was humble, and he was hilarious. It felt to me like Theodor was a guy who didn't have to do quite as much UNLEARNING about the world and all the people on it or about the Earth itself and all the life it sustains. He understood. I want you all to know that the thoughtfulness, the kindness, the patience that you modeled for him and instilled in Ted - We witnessed that. All the ways you invited him to be reflective, to think critically, to act ethically, to be vulnerable and silly - They stuck. The man he became was all those things and so much more. And I promise you, his spirit will live on through me and my family, and I'll always be grateful for his life. I miss him. I love you. I'm so deeply sorry.

My wonderful friend Theo was truly a person unlike anyone else, and an absolute light in the many communities he immersed himself in. I am absolutely devestated about the loss of a person so impactful, so caring, and someone I always enjoyed talking to. Theo had a love for music and art that influenced his interpretations of the world around him. He was extremely inquisitive and fond of finding meaning in simplicity. In moments where most people might become bitter he would remain positive and forward thinking. The collection of music, books, and movies I have as a result of the things Theo sent me is something I'm so grateful for. I wish I would've asked him so many more questions, I know he had a wealth of knowledge he was always willing to share. I feel like people who truly think fully and deeply are few and far between. Theo and I met when we were 14. 8 years ago. He asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes. We had so many fun memories. Some of the most memorable were painting with his mom and playing with their dog, Nutella. We were super young, and that was probably my most awkward era as I figured out who I was. After realizing the reality of how people can be over the years, I always felt a deep appreciation for Theo being so kind and respectful during that stage of my life. We decided after a little while being friends was the better option, but we promised to always be there for each other, and we did. He was one of my best friends. I just wish I could've been there more for him. I wish I liked texting more. I planned on catching up after college, collaborating on something. I was looking forward to it. There's just certain people you know will always be there on the same page with you. Where there's a deep sense of encouragement knowing they exist because they, along with you, are genuinely looking to make the world a better place. I am so deeply saddened because it's just so rare and sacred to find a friend like that. But I have to look at this at the way he would. I think he would say something among the lines of we are all connected and live on in different ways, with some explenation that would take me awhile to understand. I'm grateful to have been Theo's friend. And I will make it my goal in the new year to share with others the things he so kindly shared with me. The nature of Theo's death is a tragic reminder of the work that must be done to achieve accessibility, integrity, and equality in all aspects of healthcare. College students in particular, while experiencing high volumes of stress, need more resources that apply to them. I'll always remember Theo, and in his memory ask you to do one thing he would always ask for, which is love one another.

Theo had made my last year at OIT very special. We had bonded through the fraternity, music, movies, Lego, and more. It is rare to find a friend like him. Drew, Theo, and I would spend hours sharing songs with each other. Just taking turns playing songs. He had ignited a love for Death Grips inside me through this. Theo's love for Dune was also contagious. These things will always remind me of him. Theo also had an excellent sense of adventure, where even a car ride was selfie worthy. I recall a conversation during a car ride where I had talked about fears and hesitations towards the corporate world I would be thrust into upon graduation and he listened, imparted some wisdom, and assured me it wouldn't be that bad. He was right, and far wiser than me. We would text chat often. Continuing to share music and movies with each other.

He must love this photo because he's used it as his profile picture for a long time🤍 Here he's hanging out on the rocks with Penny at the riverside at one of our favorite spots in this Gorge. It was a beautiful day to be free- all four of us, together and happy 🤍🤍🤍🤍
