Susan J. Blohowiak, 63, of Carmel-by-the-Sea, died peacefully on November 14, 2021, in Portola Valley, California, embraced by her loving husband of 42 years, Donald W. Blohowiak of Carmel. A native of Wisconsin, Susan was a longtime resident of New Jersey where she was a learning consultant and special education teacher for Princeton Regional Schools. She also lived in Virginia; Orange County, California; Colorado, and Michigan. Sue is additionally survived by her parents, Donald and Carmilla Ullrich of Naples, FL; her son, Ben Blohowiak (Megan Kennedy) of Charlottesville, VA; her son Aaron Blohowiak (Maeve O'Huallachain) of Burlingame, CA; a host of other loving relatives, friends and colleagues, and two cherished grandsons, Augustine and Oscar Blohowiak. A memorial service celebrating Susan's life of joy is scheduled for September 24, 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Carmel Cares to support equitable access to walking trails and the healing power of nature, or another organization of your choosing. In her own words: "As I write these words from my heart in anticipation that you will read them after I am gone, I want for you to know that, at this time, I did not fear death itself although there have been many moments when I've felt afraid. To my astonishment, I have also known some peace of mind along this winding, rocky and vista-filled road. "I've looked upon my end-of-life as a personal challenge-as an expression of how to best live each moment. As I have confronted the end of my days, I've asked my doctors, family and friends to help maintain my quality of life and preserve my dignity so that I could still feel like myself. And I have. Despite the challenges and changes, I still feel like me. "Although I had been living...rather, we, all of us here had been living with my disease since 2002, these last few years have given me, us so many new opportunities, more 'firsts' to celebrate our lives together. "Every day I woke and said to myself, 'thank you, I'm happy to be here.'" - Susan Please join us in celebrating the life of Susan Jean Blohowiak as she celebrated each of us in her own unique and special way. I met Sue in Palo Alto when Don, Sue and Doogie literally lived across the cottage compound driveway from Jonathan and me. We were sad to have lost Aaron and Maeve as neighbors but quickly discovered that the "elder" Blohowiaks were a sneaky amount of fun! I'll always cherish our dinners at La Viga (Sue loved the coconut shrimp!) and Zareen's, as well as the frequent girls' meet-ups for gelato, ice cream and pastry in Palo Alto. Plus long walks around the College Terrace neighborhood to catch up on life and treatment and the next planned adventure. I marveled at her determination as she would tell me she walked to Menlo Park and back or around the Dish or up Kite Hill - which was quite often further than I walked over the course of several days. And I have an enduring memory of her so often out in front of the cottage in the morning watering all of her plants in the bright sunshine with Doogie on the porch. I remain struck to this day by Sue's vitality, boldness of spirit and sense of adventure. She had a fiercely joyful way of living life which has been an inspiration for me - always interested in learning and thinking and experiencing new things and always looking for joy and beauty even in the smallest things. Thank you, Don, Ben, Meg, Aaron and Maeve, for sharing Sue with all of us. I feel so lucky to have had her in my life. -Juliana

This was a few weeks after we arrived in DC in 2014. We reconnected with Sue and Don. Here Sue and I are waiting for Grandpa Don as part of a honor flight.

Mary and I spent a few unforgettable days with Sue and Don in Carmel-by-the Sea. Sue loved it there. She took us everywhere and didn't stop. Hiking the trails along the ocean with Sue and Don is a cherished memory of our time with Sue that we will have forever.
