Original Quotes

“Never spare a bender, kick ‘em on the tender!”

A playful mantra to deal with those unfortunate enough to have dropped something on the floor

"No good deed goes unpunished.. but you gotta do 'em anyway!"

“The way you solve any problem is with first principles. If you don’t know the formula, it’s no problem, just derive it from scratch!”

Favorite Quotes (usually as lessons for his children)

“Everything that can go wrong will go wrong.. at the worst possible moment!”

My father’s beloved “Murphy’s Law” and the relevant Finagle’s Law Corollary

“When one's goat gets missing, the aroma of a neighbour's soup gets suspicious.”

Robert Mugabe

“I don’t need your money! Please be a good citizen of whichever country you decide to live in, and help and lift up your local community. This will be the biggest service you can perform for me, and for India.”

Abdul Kalam, directly to my father and other Indian-origin delegates when he visited him at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. My father mentioned on several occasions that this quote changed his life.

Poem: Alaska

All ice and yet so warm,

No soul yet full of charm.

Tis definitely the earth’s cocoon and chrysalis,

Home to the iridescent butterfly Borealis.

Many a mighty river, formed from but a solitary tear,

Of an exuberant, but constantly weeping glacier.

To be learnt from their beauty, there’s much, oh so much,

Blue fire in their belly, yet cold to the touch.

With the coming of spring, and some warmth in the weather,

Mother Hubbard gives birth with some glee.

With a hiss and a crackle, at the end of their tether,

The newborn chunks tumble down to the sea.

Given up for dead, yet meant for the living,

A toll while it takes, so generous in giving.

Oh, Alaska doth give, both wet and dry lairs,

It gives to the whales, it gives to the bears.

It gives to the young, it gives to the old,

There’s oil and diamonds, there even is gold.

To call this place heaven, even that wont suffice,

You can walk here on water, you just call it ice.

Now, a fond memory is all that I’ve got,

Of a perfect landscape, ne’er a blot

Sometimes I hear, and sometimes not,

The flowers singing “forget me not”.

Sundy Srinivasan The first time I met Sundy, he was dressed up as a woman on stage. Just like the many areas he excelled in, of course he stood out as an excellent actor and I had to go congratulate him at the end of the play. We got a formal introduction at a groundbreaking ceremony that I was emceeing and he remarked that the dignitaries had to actually "dig" to qualify. The rest was history. We became very good friends. He had a way with words which was unparalleled. The punster was working on a collection of homographs. He was very passionate about solving cryptic crossword clues, keeping wickets in cricket matches, playing poker, reading every issue of the Readers Digest from cover to cover, watching courtroom dramas, acting in plays and Val Doonican's songs. He was a foodie and momos and sweets were his favorite. His 60th birthday was a milestone achievement for him since his father had passed when he was 60. He always used to say, "I'll walk away into the horizon" which he did in a very untimely manner and he'll be very fondly missed. I feel fortunate to have had the privilege of knowing him on a personal level. He lived for others and made himself the last priority.

Yella (Narayana Yellapragada)

POSUYE - that was the name of the car we designed for one of our Mechanical Engineering classes. Five years in the same hostel Jwala and same discipline Mech Engg, five years being a part of JPS, the Jwala Porch Society, the group of velas - the term used for students who felt time should not be wasted on studying and five years of doing crosswords. Those five years formed an indelible bond that just seemed to grow stronger with each passing year. And we were able to relive a lot of those memories in the 40th year Reunion we had in February earlier this year. It was really nice that we were able to spend all that time together at the reunion. So many talents, so many accomplishments, so many lives you touched Sundy, and so much you gave of yourself freely to others. I miss you, buddy. Our entire batch is missing you. And wherever you are, besides everything that you do, you must be regaling them with your signature jokes. I can still hear you say - Yella, ek joke sun yaar too. Two things stand out in all the memories. Sundy, Meena, Abhiram and Abhilaksh stayed with us in the Bay Area about 20 years back. Sundy’s sons and our son were roughly the same age and we had a great time. And then recently, my son was in touch with Sundy for some professional advice. My son found those sessions with Sundy very helpful. And when my son asked him - what can I do in return - Sundy said give me one Moti Choor ka Laddoo. My son panicked - he didn’t know what that was - and he called us, his parents. My wife makes mixture, laddoos etc for Diwali - and that was over. She said she will make another batch before Christmas and we can send to Sundy uncle. That was not to be. This year I did not get to call you on your birthday. I want to read the WhatsApp message I sent you. Belated birthday greetings chief, for 2nd of December. I kept thinking I was going to call you and I never got to it that day. I am always amazed at the doing and giving that you pack into the same 24 hours that each one of us has! Keep at it and wish you continued success. With love. Alas - that message was two hours too late. And one thing the Jwala gang and the entire 1984 batch wishes to say to your sons and the rest of the family. You were a part of us - and by extension, your family is a part of us. We are just a phone call away whenever you want us to do something. I wish you well, Sundy, my very dear friend. Om Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi. Yella (representing the Jwala gang and the 1984 IITD batch).

I met Sundy for the first time in 1982 when joining Jwala at IIT Delhi. Sundy's charming personality made him fun to be around and talk to., Have met him a few times since then at PanIIT events, and over Zoom calls. Saddened to learn of his departure - A big loss for the IIT and the Houston community.

I had the privilege of working with him for the past two years on several projects. In that short time, he left a lasting mark on our team and our office culture. He started the tradition of eating together at the office lunch table, always bringing generous amounts of food for everyone to share. He used to drag me out of my office to join him for lunch. He also started our office ping pong games — we used to play at least once a week, and he beat me every single time, and he was always suspicious that I was letting him win (I wasn't Sundy). Sundy will be remembered not just for his work, but for the sense of community and joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed.
