Sumit Sarkar

The Swadeshi movement of 1903–1908 — the subject of Sarkar's first landmark study, which reframed the story of Bengali anti-colonial resistance.

Sumit Sarkar was one of India's most towering historians — a scholar whose lifelong mission was to make history speak for those who had been written out of it. Born on 1 January 1939 into a distinguished Brahmo family in Calcutta (now Kolkata), he carried an extraordinary intellectual inheritance: his father was pioneering historian Susobhan Sarkar, and his maternal uncle was the legendary statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. From the very beginning, rigour and curiosity were in his bones.

Sarkar completed his BA (Honours) in History at Presidency College, Calcutta — one of the subcontinent's great academic institutions — before earning his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta. He went on to lecture at Calcutta, then to serve as a Reader at the University of Burdwan, and eventually to hold a postdoctoral fellowship at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 1974 he joined the University of Delhi as Professor of History, and it was there, over thirty years, that he shaped generations of scholars with his scintillating lectures — known for his gift of elaborating an entire paragraph from a single word.

His scholarly output was remarkable in both breadth and depth. His 1973 study The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, 1903–1908 remains a foundational text on anti-colonial popular resistance. His 1983 textbook Modern India: 1885–1947 became the definitive guide to an era for students across the country. Writing Social History (1997), Beyond Nationalist Frames (2002), and Essays of a Lifetime (2017) deepened his exploration of culture, labour, gender, and subaltern agency. He was a founding member of the Subaltern Studies Collective, though he later became one of its sharpest critics, pushing back against what he saw as the collective's drift toward postmodernism at the expense of materialist analysis.

A Marxist historian of rigorous empirical conviction, Sarkar reoriented the field away from imperialist and leader-centred narratives toward the socio-economic processes and the courage of ordinary Indians. He was a staunch secularist and anti-fascist who understood history as a democratic project. He is survived by his wife, historian Tanika Sarkar — his intellectual partner and collaborator across decades — and their son Aditya Sarkar, associate professor of South Asian History at the University of Warwick.

Sumit Sarkar passed away at his Delhi residence on 13 August 2026, aged 87, from age-related ailments. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: a life devoted, with uncommon grace and rigour, to making the past an instrument of justice.
