Mementos

The Liu family thanks you very much for your expressions of condolence.

Steven Liu passed away suddenly on May 25, 2018 in Beijing, China, where he most recently served as Partner and Chief Representative of the Beijing Office for Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian LLP. He is survived by his wife, two children, and parents. Steven was a consummate professional admired by his work colleagues as a capable and highly skilled lawyer who boldly initiated new ventures. Recent accomplishments include his successful opening of offices in Beijing for Gunderson in 2012 and DLA Piper in 2007, where he specialized in private equity and venture capital. Over the years, in his capacity as attorney, he participated in over 100 mergers and acquisitions. He also mentored those he recruited, leading by example whenever someone needed extra help. His peers and subordinates alike looked up to him. As a father, friend, husband, and son, he also excelled. He was beloved by all who knew him. He is remembered as being smart, humble, compassionate, funny, kind, and caring. He enjoyed sports and was especially fond of his Golden State Warriors, even before they became a winning team. Loyalty and fidelity, hallmarks of his sports fandom, were also values that he carried forward into his life. Steven first came from Taiwan to America as a child. His parents instilled in him a love of learning, a passion for education, and a sense of service and respect for his local community of friends and strangers. Steven attended private school at Harker Academy and Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, before heading to the University of California at Berkeley for his bachelor’s degree in English and Economics. Steven then attended law school at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with a juris doctor degree in 1997. Steven began his law career at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, first as a summer associate, then as an attorney, where he plied his trade, working in mergers and acquisitions. He relished the opportunity to learn about the venture capital and technology industries within the heart of Silicon Valley. Steven quickly distinguished himself, even at the largest law firm in the Bay Area. He practiced a very humble form of excellence. He inspired others through his achievements, encouraged his peers through his kind words, and served others through his compassionate acts. His family, friends, and colleagues will miss him dearly. Memorial: The family invites those who knew Steven to join them at the Memorial Service: 9:30a – 11a: Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 W El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA 94040 Following the service, the burial will commence: 11a – 12:30p: Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Rey Dr, Los Altos, CA 94024 Those interested in attending are invited to RSVP to Vincent Chang at vincentjchang@gmail.com

Steven was a mentor and a friend, and one of the first people to believe in me. He was always available for quick advice, but his words were full of knowledge, wisdom and compassion gained from deep experience. We lost touch after I moved away from China in 2013. Today I thought of him and thought of reaching out, and was shocked to find that he has passed long ago. I will be ever grateful for his support. He is missed by his family and his friends, and the world is a dimmer place without him.

Steve is among my oldest friends, someone who saw me through all of my changes in life without judgment. I have so many fond memories of Steve, from hanging out in his SJ house to enjoying his first home in Palo Alto. He was "Uncle Steve" to our kids and a close confidante to me. Among the best memories would be the joy he expressed when I delivered a basketball signed by all the Warriors when they were the second-losingest team in the history of the sport! "What a great memento!" he cried. I'm glad that we got the chance to enjoy several games together after the team turned things around. Steve will be missed by so many. I am grateful for the years we enjoyed together.

I only learned of Steven's passing recently (DEC '20). Deep condolences to his family who have been going through holidays, birthdays, and life with out Steven. I knew him Freshmen year at Cal and ran into him a few times after graduation, connecting again when he was starting work in China (I was living as an expat in Singapore then). He was a funny, intelligent and sensitive person w/ an 'edge.' We shared a 'cool' taste in music. I was totally shocked to learn about Steven's passing and I thank Tony Hale for allowing me to reach out to him blindly and hopping on the phone with me to process some of this. Life can be tragic for some, but it sounds like Steven made real positive and lasting marks on others.

My deepest condolences to the Liu family. I first met Steve during my senior year at Cal. He was funny, smart and kind. He introduced me to the music of the Replacements and Tom Waits and the joy of eating Top Dog late at night. We mostly kept in touch via e-mail after law school. It was exciting to watch his success in the legal field over the years. No matter where he was in life, however, his greatest source of joy was his family - his loving parents and especially his wife and two sons. The last time we corresponded, he was the happiest I had ever seen him. I will miss him dearly, but I know his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
