Words cannot do justice to what a generous, kind-hearted person we have lost. I first met Steve when he returned to his former school The Earls High in 1981 to teach computer studies, and some mathematics in my department. He proved to be an enthusiastic, able and supportive colleague. Moreover he has been a valuable friend ever since. As IT Coordinator and Network Manager Steve always showed great patience in helping me develop my computer skills, and how to use IT to improve the mathematics curriculum. Outside of school, he has given me advice and helped with various household jobs which I could not have completed alone, often providing the necessary tools. Steve lent me a bicycle for a week in Pembrokeshire. During the week he and Jane turned up in The Pennmobile with Nick and Natasha looking like drowned rats after torrential rain had penetrated the vehicle. Undaunted the show went on including our attempts at waterskiing and Steve driving the Pennmobile through the narrowest lanes to reach a beach at Marloes. Steve was always willing to have a go, including at sports such as football, basketball, hockey, volleyball, and his beloved cricket and lifesaving. A staff cricket match against Leasowes was interrupted by a biblical lightning storm and downpour. As we ran desperately for the cover of the pavilion, Steve, conscientious as ever, raced off to the main school building to switch off and save the computer network. More recently Steve has come to the rescue in his role as a plumber. Normally I would give him a lift with Marj to the monthly Earls staff drink. Future meetings will not be the same. It has been unbelievably hard to write this. I am gutted but honoured to have known you Steve. Mervyn (and Hilary)

Gone too soon, our friend & neighbour for many years. Steve will always be remembered as a friendly, caring, gentle, loving family man. Jane he loved you to bits, Tash & Nic, he was always so proud of you & he couldn't have been a prouder grandad to Bailey, Harlie & Elliot. Many cups of coffee putting the world to rights, many meals, bbqs, the occasional pint or glass of vino & any excuse to talk about cricket. Too many good times to list but those good times will live on in our memories forever. Tom and Abi remember Uncle Steve collecting them from school, playing with them in the garden and particularly taking them to the Christingle service at church each year. Jane, Tash, Nic & families, our loss doesn't compare to yours but Steve was loved by us all & we will miss our very dear friend. We share your grief at this at this very sad time & we're here for you.

In total shock at this awful news. Remember Steve and Jane from Providence Methodist church and from our time together at Halesowen Grammar School with lots of love, laughs and affection , and sadly lost touch as the years passed us by. Sending huge condolences, together with love and hugs to Jane and the family. Kind regards Bob Cooper and family

What can be said that hasn't already been said. Steve was a prince among men. One of the kindest, caring people I have ever met, yet had a wicked sense of humour. I've worked with Tash for the past 9 years or so and have met Steve a few times over the years. His warmth and humanity were without bounds. He helped Dave do my flat roof and much laughter was had, enjoyed the biscuits too. I played football with Steve in all weathers and he always had a smile on his face and an ear for my woes. He was nicknamed 'THE WALL' and certainly lived up to it. Recently Steve has helped through the break up of my marriage and provided me with plenty of boxes to move house. Jane and Steve made the perfect marriage and are amazing parents and grandparents. Steve, I will miss you dreadfully. My thoughts go to Jane, Tash, Nic and their families. I am here for you. By the way Steve I still have some boxes if you want them back. Sleep well.

Our hearts go out to you and the family Jane, at this sad time. We knew Steve as a very kind, thoughtful and caring family man. I was privileged to sit next to him at church morning service during the last two years and really enjoyed his gentle sense of humour. Sunday mornings won't be the same without him. Our sons remember Steve from their years spent at Sunday school. For James, being in the same class as his pal Nic, Steve was simply Nic's Dad. Josh, being younger, remembers Steve's white beard! In more recent times they all saw him again at Richard and Katie's wedding. At Messy Church, James would take Lauren and Steve would invariably be up to his eyes in glitter, crayons, googly eyes and a mountain of material and bits of paper in order to help the children create something special. All of this would be achieved with a calm patience and gentle good nature. We will miss him.
