How to write about Stephen? He was a brilliant writer, crafting stories and wrestling with words in such a way that once his writing was done (after copious amounts of revision and second-guessing himself) the final product was art. I do not possess any talent with words, but what I do have is an immense, infinite love and devotion to this husband of mine, this partner I wished to have for life, my best friend and biggest fan. Stephen loved his three dogs and left me 700+ pictures of them to prove it. His sense of humor was witty and sometimes dark - if he felt comfortable enough to share it with you, you knew you were a good friend. Intense in his feelings and opinions, you always knew exactly where he stood when talking to him. He felt and experienced everything very deeply, everything really, small and big, good and bad. His great love for me, expressed daily, always on his lips and in his actions, full of generosity and care. I wish he could have extended himself the same love, grace, and care he had for me. Stephen is loved, missed, cherished, and he matters more than he will ever know. I will use my words to continue to remind him of that, everyday, until we meet again.

Thinking about Stephen a lot lately, especially today. I think of him whenever I have ups and downs with writing (which is often). The last time I saw him in person, he gave me encouragement on a writing fellowship I'd gotten into and was feeling overwhelmed by. The last time I saw him via zoom, he gave me feedback on a script I'd written. I recently made it to the 2nd round of a fellowship that Stephen advanced in a few years ago. I was happy for him then and I know he'd be happy for me now. Stephen believed in my writing, even when my own belief faltered. I'm a better writer and person for having known him. I miss our talks, his sense of humor, and his stories. Miss you, man. Wish you were here.

I met Stephen through the Pasadena screenwriting group back in 2013. He was an immensely talented writer and we were privileged to read many of his scripts over the next few years, as well as dozens of us receiving his insightful comments on our own scripts. His original stories were always brimming with imagination, humor, and vivid action scenes, as were his spec scripts of existing shows - so much so, in fact, that I remember all those specs as if they were actual filmed episodes I'd watched on TV. I wish I'd known him far better outside of the group, although I do have fond memories of occasions when some of us got together outside of group meetings. I'll always remember his wonderful sense of humor and his great smile that made it impossible to resist smiling back. I'm so sad I won't ever see that smile again in person, but it will always be in my memories of Stephen.
