Loved Ones

Sophie B. - a luminous child who blossomed into an even more radiant young woman, cast an extraordinary glow on all within her wide-ranging orbit. Her compassion, depth, generosity, intellect, and indomitable spirit exerted a profound influence on so many and in such diverse and positive ways. Sophia contributed spark and sizzle to whatever stage she trod, be it dramatic, family, sorority, temple, camp, or volunteer effort. Her beautiful smile and vivacious spirit brought laughter and love to everyone she knew. Whether volunteering, participating in school or sorority activities, performing in a musical or promoting a social cause, Sophia gave 100%. She was deeply dedicated to her family and to her Jewish faith. She was devoted to her two younger sisters and was a fiercely loyal friend.

There is not one amongst us who did not benefit by having Sophia in our lives. She truly was and always will be an indelible, positive force and blessing. There is no doubt that Sophia's spirit will continue giving to the universe in ways we can’t even begin to imagine.

Lawrence (& Julie): It has been many years since we were last in contact, but I was saddened to hear the tragic news, thoughtfully passed on to me by Billy and some other BBYO alumni. Alas, I did not have the privilege to have known your Sophie but others and these tributes have given me a sense of how wonderful she was. My heart goes out to you and to her entire community of family and friends. I can only hope that all of the support will offer some measure of comfort.

This picture was taken at Sabina’s birthday party. We decided to make pizza from scratch and we were trying to be authentic and toss the pizza dough in the air. I can still picture Sophia covering her face with flour all over her hands and face, giggling because she threw her dough so high it hit the ceiling fan, which was as you can imagine a huge mess. My first vivid memory of Sophia was on our first girls out trip to Disney. We took up 2 or 3 minivans full of girls and moms. I remember being in the van with Terri, Julie and I think Shanna. When we first arrived we decided to eat dinner at downtown Disney at the dinosaur restaurant (t-Rex café?) my memory is escaping me right now. But we couldn’t find parking and of course we were late for our reservation, so we pulled up and they kicked me out of the van with the girls to run to make the reservation. Unbeknownst to me, Sophia was terrified of characters and loud noises and most things at that age. Sophia froze and would not move, the other girls were scattering and it was like herding kittens. So I picked up Sophia and threw her over my shoulder like a fireman and ran with the other girls to the restaurant. I was so happy to finally see Julie, because Sophia was shaking like a leaf. Years later,I was so proud when Sophia, even though she was petrified made it through the FIU ropes course. It was a huge deal for her to overcome that fear and I was so proud of her. She worked so hard on her own fears and anxieties and her family was right there next to her helping her all along the way. It was a joy to be a witness to some of her milestones and to cheer her on. We will miss this sweet girl.

Julie and Lawrence It has taken me some time to express to you the profound sadness that I and so many others feel about your tragic loss. Although I didn't know Sophia well, I have learned about her in the last week. But I do understand from knowing both of you how Sophia was such an outstanding daughter, sister , grand daughter, cousin and friend. She excelled in all that she worked for and this is because of the values and actions you taught her. Know that you are in our thoughts and hope that the love from so many people will comfort you.

One of my greatest joys was teaching Sophia. So bright, so kind, so warm and the most radiant smile. I will miss her. May her memory be for a blessing.

Sophia, your name, smile and ruach will always be here. I met your mom when she was pregnant with you and I’ve known you all your life. You were supposed to change this world with your “Do Good” quote and actions. May you rest and peace beautiful Soph! I remember the last time I saw you how you complemented everything I was wearing and we talked about fashion. May your memory be a blessing.
