I was giving back to the society that had given me so much.

Nataraja Krishnamoorthy — known to the world simply as Soorya, the Sanskrit word for "sun" — was a man who lived at the rare intersection of science and art, illuminating Kerala's cultural landscape for more than four decades. Born on April 11, 1951, in Kottayam, Kerala, he grew up in a household of distinguished public servants: his father, T. Nataraja Pillai, served as Chief Engineer of Kerala State, and his mother, C. Saraswathi Amma, was a committed activist of the Gandhi Peace Foundation. That dual inheritance — technical rigor and humanist idealism — would define everything he built. Educated at the Government Model High School and Government Arts College in Thiruvananthapuram, and later at the College of Fine Arts and TKM College of Engineering in Kollam, Krishnamoorthy graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1972 and joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). There he worked under the guidance of the future President APJ Abdul Kalam, contributing to India's space program while quietly tending a parallel passion for theatre and film. Even within ISRO's laboratories, he devoted evenings and weekends to film societies and cultural events. On September 3, 1977, he presented his first major theatrical production — "Thamaso Ma Jyothirgamaya" — at the University Senate Hall in Thiruvananthapuram. That evening marked the birth of the Soorya movement. He founded the Soorya Stage and Film Society the same year, and the institution grew into one of Asia's largest cultural organizations, extending across 23 countries and 30 international cities. The annual Soorya Festival, spanning over 100 consecutive days, was recognized by the Limca Book of Records as Asia's longest-running cultural festival. In 1978, Krishnamoorthy pioneered Kerala's first light-and-sound show, "Veluthampi Dalawa," revolutionizing Malayalam stagecraft with innovative multimedia production. His landmark play "Melvilasom," staged over 400 times across venues worldwide, was later adapted into a celebrated 2011 courtroom drama film, for which he also wrote the screenplay. He operated the Soorya organization with a ten-member volunteer core, no salaried staff, and a non-commercial philosophy — the festival ran on memberships alone, with no ticketed shows and no awards. After 27 years at ISRO, Krishnamoorthy took voluntary retirement in 1999 to dedicate himself entirely to culture. He went on to serve as Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Festival Director of the International Theatre Festival of Kerala, Director of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, and Dean of the University of Calicut. A devout worshipper of Lord Ganesha, he curated a collection of over 1,500 idols at his residence, Sooryachaitanya, opening his home to the public each Ganesha Chaturthi. In 2018, he established Ganesham, a free black-box theatre in Thycaud, providing emerging artists an accessible stage. He received the National Award for Stage Craft and Direction from the President of India in 1996, the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu Government in 2006, and the Kerala Prabha Award — the state's second-highest civilian honor — in 2023. He is survived by his wife Raji, daughter Sita, and son Laxman. Soorya Krishnamoorthy passed away on September 23, 2026, in Thiruvananthapuram, at the age of 78. He leaves behind a movement that he always insisted was never just his own: "It's by god's grace and because of my amazing team."

He was like a mentor to me. I feel so blessed to have lived my life in the era where Soorya Krishnamoorthy was there because I don't think that there could be anybody else who can replace him.

There is nobody like him in the art world, there will never be one! The vacuum is too huge to fill.

Cameo Sreekanth

He was the first person in Keralam to explore the possibilities of multimedia in stage productions. What I admired most about him was his punctuality as an organiser of art and cultural events. The practice of starting shows at the predetermined time in the city started with Soorya Festival.
