It was an honour and a privilege to play for Wigan. If I had my time all over again, I'd do exactly the same thing again.

Sir William John Boston was born on 6 August 1934 in Butetown, Cardiff — the vibrant, multi-cultural neighbourhood known as Tiger Bay — the sixth of eleven children of a Sierra Leonean merchant seaman father and an Irish mother. From those humble beginnings beside Cardiff docks, he would go on to become the greatest try-scorer in Wigan's history, one of the finest rugby league players who ever lived, and, in the final chapter of a remarkable life, the first rugby league player ever to receive a knighthood. Boston first announced himself in rugby union with Cardiff International Athletic Club and represented Wales at Boys and Youth level in 1952, becoming the first black player to represent any Welsh rugby union side. Despite his obvious gifts, Cardiff RFC never offered him a trial — a slight widely attributed to the racial prejudices of the era. The game's loss was rugby league's extraordinary gain. During National Service with the Royal Signals at Catterick, Boston's explosive pace and thunderous hand-off drew the attention of Wigan chairman Joe Taylor. On 13 March 1953, Taylor offered the 18-year-old a £3,000 signing fee — an exceptional sum at the time — and Boston made his Wigan debut on 21 November 1953 against Barrow, scoring a try almost as a matter of course. Known as "the Cardiff Express," he possessed a devastating combination of speed, power, and a hip movement that left defenders reaching at thin air. Over 15 seasons at Central Park he scored 478 tries in 488 appearances, a club record that has never been approached. He was part of Great Britain's 1960 World Cup-winning side, represented his country 31 times and scored 24 international tries, and his career total of 571 tries stands second only in the history of the game. Beyond the numbers, Boston carried his greatness with remarkable humility. He settled in Wigan for good — more than 70 years — running the Griffin Hotel after he hung up his boots, and remained a fixture at Warriors home games, the crowd cheering warmly whenever cameras found him in the stands. In June 2025, King Charles III knighted him, a moment of joy for Wigan and for the sport. Just over a year later, Sir Billy Boston passed away peacefully on 24 August 2026, four days after the funeral of his beloved wife of 70 years, Lady Joan. He was 92. He leaves behind six children, a city of admirers, and a legacy that transcends sport.

But Billy's legacy was not simply what he achieved. It was the humility with which he carried it. Despite everything he accomplished, he remained a quiet, dignified and deeply respected man. He leaves behind an example that will endure for generations.

Sir Billy Boston was more than an all time great of the sport of rugby league. His name both symbolised and transcended it. He was one of the greats for both Wigan and Great Britain in the golden era of our sport in the 1950s and 60s. He was a giant amongst giants.

Billy Boston was everybody's hero, including my Mum's. His achievements in rugby league were extraordinary, and his knighthood was a fitting recognition of a career that brought great credit to Wigan and to the game.
