Loved Ones

Signe L. Einess—cherished wife, stepmother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great‑aunt—passed away on December 13, 2025, after meeting cancer with remarkable courage and grace. Born in Seattle in 1950, she spent her entire life in the Pacific Northwest, where she raised her family, built a career, and cultivated deep, enduring friendships.

Signe was preceded in death by her parents, Arne and Irene, and by her grandson, Hunter. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Dan; her daughters, Jackie and Veray, and their families; grandchildren Haylie, James, and Brooklynn; her sister, Marta, and her family; nephews Josh and Jake and their families; grandnephews Leif, Brock, and Beau; a loyal dog, Kona; and many treasured friends. She is also survived by a new granddaughter who will carry her name—a beautiful continuation of her legacy.

A true city girl, Signe grew up in Seattle and Mountlake Terrace, graduating from Mountlake Terrace High School before attending Western Washington University. She spent her professional life in banking and web production, bringing diligence and creativity to every role.

Signe’s interests were as vibrant as her personality. She loved walking with friends, participating in her book club, and being an active member of the Swedish Club in Seattle. A talented photographer, she delighted in creating personalized calendars for her family. She had a knack for finding the perfect gifts and enjoyed shopping for those she loved. Whidbey Island was one of her favorite places to visit.

Her artistic spirit shone through her jewelry making, a craft she pursued for many years while traveling to local fairs to share her beautiful work. She found joy in gardening and was an exceptional cook, known for preparing memorable meals for family and friends.

A curious and enthusiastic traveler, Signe explored much of the world, bringing warmth, humor, and an engaging presence wherever she went. She was admired for her intelligence, her attentive listening, and her quick wit—qualities that brightened gatherings and comforted those around her.

Throughout her illness, Signe remained steadfast and dignified, her spirit undimmed. She will be remembered with deep affection by all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, her friends, and the granddaughter who now carries her name.

I moved from Seattle to Mountlake Terrace in 1962 - 7th grade. That's when I met Signe. My family life was a living hell; I was a bit of an outsider. But Signe and I clicked. She became my best friend. I'd walk to her home in lower Terrace and we would walk to school together nearly every morning. She had a lovely "normal" family and I was so very glad to be her friend. She was smart, clever, kind and bubbly. Really a great friend! Signe, you probably saved my life on a few occasions. I needed you more than you know. I will never forget you. I wish I could have known you in our adult lives. Drop in and flicker my lights sometime .. I'll wave and blow you a kiss. God bless you, beautiful soul that you are.

After working together in various jobs at Peoples Bank, eight of us decided to meet at Signe's place to watch Dallas on TV in 1980. We needed to find out who killed JR! Instead we found a sisterhood and decided to form our Girls Night Out (GNO) group consisting of Signe, Janis, Carla, Ann, Marla, Willie, Wilma and myself. Every month we would meet to talk about and support each other with our jobs, families, love life's, getting married, getting our own homes, starting families, traveling and our dreams for the future. Signe was an inspiration! She taught aerobics, made jewelry. loved music, reading, her pets, plants and had her own sense of style! She loved Seattle and her family! In our later years, we were increasingly separated by new jobs, moves to new homes and finally retirement. However we still made a point of getting together as often as possible and staying in touch with emails and cards. How quickly 45 years have gone by! We were devastated when Signe found out about her cancer but the Scandinavian Warrior that she is, did everything she could to keep it from slowing her down and kept that fearless Signe attitude. Of course she could not do all this without the support of Dan, her family and her many friends! Signe didn't want to miss a moment of life and continued to travel, learn new things and spend time with her family and friends. I will miss her passion for life, her courage to stand up for what she thought was right, her acceptance of the many people she met, her smile and that great laugh! She will be missed but will always be a part of us.

Signe was our next door neighbor in an amazing apartment building overlooking Lake Union in Seattle in the early 90s. She was the only tenant with a pet, her beloved lovebird Casanova. We enjoyed getting to know Signe and then Dan when they met. We were sad to lose our neighbor when they bought their Craftsman in Wallingford but kept up our friendship while we still lived in Wallingford. Signe and Dan had us over for New Year's Eve in 1993 right after we'd had a miscarriage and were very sad - just the four of us. They also celebrated when we had our first baby in 1995. Signe connected us with a realtor who helped us find and buy our first house. We kept in touch via Christmas cards and letters through December 2024. Signe was a force of nature and we'll always remember her fondly.

My Aunt Signe wasn’t just my mother’s sister – she was my second mom. Signe graced this world with her nurturing spirit and an endless capacity for loving other people’s children like they were her own. When I was really young I remember spending many evenings at Aunt Signe's watching all the newest movies on HBO, and I used to think that it was so cool that she had all the Movie channels at her house because we didn't have that at home and also getting to be down in Seattle it always felt like I was hundreds of miles away on a fun vacation. I always loved being there with her and she always had plenty of popcorn and snacks ready to go for the movies. Signe never treated me bad once. She was so always so sweet and loving to me. In the late 1990's while I was in High School, I got kicked out of my parents' house for a bit and Signe and Dan didn't hesitate to take me in and give me a loving, warm place to live. I still think about the time I lived down there with them and how I used to drive to Everett for work and School and back to Seattle to stay there at night and they never once made me feel like I didn't belong there even though I had basically intruded upon their lives for a short bit. We spent many of our Holidays down at Signe's house also, it was always a wonderful experience, and you never knew what crazy new recipe she was going to try out for dinner and honestly, they were always very good even the mashed potatoes with the skin on them. She was an excellent cook. I have so many fond memories of spending time with Signe. Far too many to count. Signe always had so many great hobbies and interests too; from her love of cooking to her photography, to her love for playing puzzle games on her computer. I don't know if it's because we are both Gemini's, but I too enjoy many of the same things she did. I feel very blessed for the time I was given with her. Signe had a huge positive impact on the person I am today and She was truly a wonderful person that will be deeply missed. I take solace in knowing she is now reunited with her mom and Dad (Nana and Papa) in Heaven and she can finally be at peace.

Signe was a treasure. She was smart, generous, loyal, kind and a true empath. Little did I know what a blessing it would be the day Signe joined my work team. She made sure I was tuned into the emotions of the people on the team. She made me a better leader. I also learned to totally trust her judgement on people we interviewed for the team. Not only was she an asset at work, but she became one of my very best friends. My memories with Signe will always be with me - Here are some of my favorites: Book Club Memories High Camp Weekend Crystal Mountain Julia Child Book Club weekend Travel Intervention trip to Malta with a celebration of Jane’s marriage Monthly meetings of the wine and garlic club – good books, great talks Making strands of cranes for good luck for Signe Food, Wine and Spirits Memories My first dinner at Canlis - hosted by Signe for my birthday Signe’s birthday dinner at Palisade A fabulous dinner party she hosted at her home for my birthday Thanksgiving dinner with Signe’s family Signe taking over to cook dinner at a Christmas dinner I was hosting The fabulous food Signe made and all the spices she has given me Wine tastings, Gin tasting and cocktail contest at Serafina's The birthday dinner club with Cindy, Bruce, Rana, Rich, Signe and Dan Martini's – many martini’s Fun Outings Walking with Signe and Jeanette during and after COVID Trivia nights at The Swedish Club Veray's wedding and baby shower and meeting Signe 2.0 Jazz Alley events Triple door events Tunes on the terrace with Susan at Sandpoint Country Club Streaming SIFF movies with me Football game watching live or with Alexia Signe being the murderer at Mimi's murder mystery party Signe sharing her travels with us Her annual calendar with gorgeous pictures she took Her often hysterically funny travel tales with pictures sent via email Love you to the moon and back, Signe.
