"Death ends a life, not a relationship. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here." - Mitch Albom

Sheryl A. Colosky of Solon, Ohio passed away peacefully in Cleveland on April 3, 2025 after a long struggle with Huntingtons Disease (HD). Her family and friends knew her as Shari.

Shari was born in Champaign, Illinois on March 30, 1946 to the late Lloyd and Hilda Ruth Hippensteele. She graduated high school in Lafayette, Indiana and earned a Bachelors Degree in Education from Purdue University. She worked in a number of jobs in the central Indiana area as an administrative assistant including positions at Purdue University, an international engineering firm, an Indianapolis law firm and Melvin Simon and Associates, a shopping center developer.

She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, travel, gardening and landscape design and reading many kinds of books. Shari enjoyed playing piano for many years. Over time she became a collector first of carousel horses and later teapots from various places we visited.

Shari was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 31 years and was a source of support and encouragement for many others in the program and those who were considering joining.

Shari was preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Hilda Ruth Hippensteele and her two siblings Dennis and Alissa. She is survived by her husband of 44 years Charles Colosky, son Geoffrey Sean Davis, his wife Janine Anderson, and our granddaughters Hannah Davis and Lauren Davis. Shari will be greatly missed by the family and friends she has left behind.

Our family wishes to thank the dedicated individuals from Cleveland Clinic Neurology Movement Disorders and Connected Care Teams and TheKey home health assistants who devotedly cared for her for many years.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you consider a donation to a memorial fund to support research by the Huntingtons Disease Society of America (HDSA) or to support the work of Alcoholics Anonymous. The tribute type is "In Memory of" and "In Tribute of Name" is "Shari Colosky."

Shari was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 31 years. During that time she served as a sponsor, secretary and active participant in many meetings in Indiana, California and Ohio. She continued to attend virtual meetings every week after she lost her ability to communicate due to her medical condition.

Who knew Shari first? I joined the Industrial Engineering department at Purdue in January 1978. And along the way I met Shari there. She was friendly and welcoming. I remember I enjoyed talking with her. What a bonus when Mick's fraternity brother "connected" with her. Sometime in 1981 Shari & Charlie came to visit us in our new home. Perfect timing to just hang out as the cleaned carpets were drying. lol These photos came out of my photo album. Cause back in-the-day all the printed pictures went in an album. These are cherished memories of our youth and friends.

How did you meet Sheryl?

I met Shari at Purdue University in the Industrial Engineering office. She worked for my advisor Professor James Barany. I was a coop student working on my summer assignment when Shari called me at the suggestion of Professor Barany. Each semester the office hired at student to help with administrative work and she offered me the job. I worked for her in the office in the Fall of 1978. She left the university position after that semester and we kept in touch after her move. We were married on April 18, 1981!

How did Sheryl make an impact on your life?

Shari was the Cool Aunt! Growing up, it's important to have adult role models outside of your immediate family that can show you another way to be. Shari was the aunt who was just so obviously cool - she seemed to know who she was and seemed to live a life that fulfilled her. She had interesting things to say and wanted to have real conversations. Unlike most adults, she seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say and what kind of person we were or wanted to be. Most other adults wanted to tell us what to do and how to be, but Shari was the Cool Aunt who seemed to accept everybody as they were. It definitely made an impact on my life to have a role model for what it looks like to live life on your own terms.

I was Shari's hospice nurse. I was privileged to witness the love between Shari and Charles. There are many kinds of love in this world, but few are as steadfast, tender, and enduring as the love Charles showed Shari. For 44 years of marriage—and especially throughout her long struggle with Huntington’s Disease—Charles was not only Shari’s husband, but her constant companion, her advocate, her protector, and her steady source of comfort. As the disease gradually changed so many things, it never changed the devotion in his heart. He met each new challenge with patience. He faced each difficult day with quiet strength. And through it all, he never stopped seeing the woman he fell in love with. When I met Shari, she was bedbound. But Charles shared that Shari was a woman of grace and depth. He shared that she gave 31 years of faithful commitment to Alcoholics Anonymous, offering hope and encouragement to countless others. She lived a life marked by resilience, faith, and generosity of spirit. Charles honored all of that. He honored her history, her passions, her dignity, and her voice—even when the disease tried to quiet it. He ensured she remained surrounded by love, family, and compassionate care. He partnered faithfully with medical teams and caregivers, always seeking what was best for her. Most of all, he ensured she never faced her illness alone. Caregiving at that level requires extraordinary strength. It asks for sacrifice, humility, and a willingness to give of oneself day after day, often without recognition. Charles gave all of that—and more. He gave Shari the priceless gift of being deeply loved until her very last breath. As we remember Shari’s life and the legacy she leaves behind—her son Geoffrey, her daughter-in-law Janine, her beloved granddaughters Hannah and Lauren, and all who cherished her—we also honor the man who stood beside her through every season. Charles, your devotion is a testament to what marriage vows truly mean. Your love carried Shari through her most difficult journey, and that love will remain part of her story forever. May you find comfort in knowing that your care made all the difference. And may the same compassion and strength you so freely gave return to you in the days ahead.
