Loved Ones

Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us everyday; unseen, unheard but always near.

Sharon Ann Hansen Todd passed away peacefully on April 17, 2021, in Reno with her husband and children at her side. She was born in Hooper NE, Aug 20, 1939, growing up in nearby Winslow as the eldest of six sisters. She graduated Hooper High in 1957 and earned an AA from Grossmont College. She married Airman John Cooke Todd (USAF), of Valley Stream, NY on July 3, 1961 at St. Rose of Lima RC in Hooper.

Sharon was a gifted craftsman and talented painter in oils and watercolors. She easily mastered any craft she tried. She always worked, often in banking, retail and hospitality, but was an entrepreneur at heart. She owned and operated a gift and flower shop near San Diego and later a travel agency in Reno specializing in themed tours of her beloved Ireland and Scotland, her Happy Places. New York's Irish Voice newspaper billed her as an Irish Expert, as did the Irish Tourism Board. She loved road trips, piling her family into the car and traveling all over the United States including cemetery visits. Sharon and John lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Peekskill, NY, St. Charles, IL, Hacienda Heights, CA, Wayne, PA, Berkeley Springs, WV, Anaheim Hills, CA, El Cajon, CA and finally Reno, NV. She loved to cook and was always making sweets, loving ice cream and fudge brownies. She had an always-endearing sense of humor - silly and dry, her laughter and smile would light up the room. She was caring and thoughtful, never missing an opportunity to send family and friends remembrances of special occasions. The evening of her passing, her home was full of family sharing comfort, memories, love, and laughter.

Sharon is survived by John, her husband of 59 years, their children John Jr, (Mara) of Seattle, WA, Moira of Sparks, NV, Mary Slaughter (Thomas) of Mechanicsville, VA, and Katherine Fallon (Michael), of Arlington, VA, eight grandchildren: Liam, John III, Claire Madeline and Eamonn of Seattle, Jackson and Thomas of Mechanicsville, Matthew and Phoebe of Arlington, sisters Celia Hansen of Eldora, IA, Jo Elaine Hansen of St. Petersburg, FL Sue Hannaford of Palmetto, FL, Pam Hector of Humboldt, NE and a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime friends from around the world. All who knew Sharon will remember her as warm, caring, accomplished, and loving. She loved children and small animals, especially piglets. If you wanted to see Sharon melt, hand her a piglet.

She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Evelyn Hansen, sister Judy Hansen, granddaughter Shelby Slaughter, and niece Madeline (Amy) Sweeney.

A celebration of Sharon’s life is being delayed due to COVID-19 and related travel issues.

There are too many warm memories to fit in this small space- a lifetime full of feelings and recollections. You were always there for me when I needed you, and I knew that I could count on that. Winnie the Pooh (I know you loved him) said it best "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard". When I was little you would read books and sing to us- your voice was so beautiful. I loved seeing you dance around the kitchen, showing all your "moves" from your when you were younger. I thought you were so cool because you believed in crystal balls, ghosts and could read our palms & tarot cards. It was inspiring to see you follow your passions- picking up the banjo, taking flower arranging classes, history & genealogy and kids movies - I remember watching Aladdin with you and laughing so hard! I found it ever so annoying that you had to point out all the beautiful trees on drives & wanted to tell me every single name of every flower we saw......but I appreciate it now, and do the same to my daughter. The most important thing you gave me was the courage to to go on my chosen path. You were so good with sending cards & knowing just what I needed to hear. One of my favorites that is framed and hanging on my wall as a reminder to spread my wings, had a red wing black bird (my favorite bird & you knew that) on the front of it with the saying "Some day I shall try my wings and wheel and soar through uncharted seas of air". I will hold all of these memories in my heart, I will miss you every day for the rest of my life.

Often I go back to my childhood memories because being a kid was a great time in my life. Mrs. Todd and the Todd family seemed to be there quite often. I remember going to swimming lessons in there VW convertible Mrs. Todd driving a car load of kids. I remember when I was riding on the handle bars of a bicycle and heel got stuck in spokes and Mrs Todd fixed me up. I remember her working at the Hallmark store and I would visit her. I remember going to quite a few dances with her kids and she was there to see us off. I remember getting 4 teeth pulled for braces and stayed that night and she was there. I remember Mrs. Todd and my mom in one car and me and a couple of her daughters in another car in Tijuana and driving down the wrong way on a one way street . I remember going to attendant training and stayed 5 weeks with the Todd's. One of my last memory seeing her was few years ago in Reno and I helped bring in the luggage after a visit visiting her grand children and it reminded me of being 6 years old again. I'm sorry you left but I will always remember you Mrs. Todd with all my heart.

The picture attached was when I was on a tour in Ireland with Mrs. Todd and Moira. I met Mrs. Todd when I was 5 years old growing up in Rowland Hts CA. Her daughter Mary Rita and I became best friends and My Mom, Beverly Livingston and Mrs.Todd became best friends as well. Our families stayed close all these years. Sharon made all the flower arrangements at my wedding in 1989, she was so talented. I loved Mrs Todd like a Mom.. She was always so warm and friendly and I know she got tired of me over their house all the time but she never made me feel unwelcomed. I remember a good story, Back when I was about 6 or 7 yrs old I got into a little jam and Mrs. Todd helped me out. I was sitting on the curb in front of their house and all the kids were riding their bikes by me, making fun of me because I didn't have a bike. Well, I ran home and got a can of raid and started chasing them with it, ok I know I was in the wrong but Mrs. Todd called me over to her and we sat on the brick wall and she told me to look up at the clouds and see what animals I can make out of them. She was an amazing woman. I will forever love Mrs. Todd..
