“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) 「

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather of six, Shai Ming Chan (Paul), who left us on June 18, 2024 at the age of 88 at Mackenzie Health Hospital in Richmond Hill. Born on April 4, 1936 in Canton, China, and was baptized Catholic in Macau in 1962, Dad lived a life characterized by professionalism, kindness, generosity, and a deep commitment to his Catholic faith, family, and friends.

Dad’s journey was one of remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication. His study was delayed due to the Second World War. He graduated in 1958 from Escola da Chong Tak in Macau. After high school graduation, he continued to pursue his study in civil engineering at National Taiwan University and graduated with his bachelor degree in 1962. After graduation, he pursued his passion for civil engineering and built a distinguished career as an engineer.

While building his career, he returned to Macau and reunited with his high-school sweetheart, our mom, Francisca Ung, and later married her in Hong Kong in 1971.

Throughout his career, he has helped build reservoirs, several subway stations, fresh water supply pipes, roads, bridges and many other infrastructures in Hong Kong. His contributions to infrastructure in Hong Kong were profound, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working with him. He was an associate with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers until his retirement.

Beyond my Dad’s professional accomplishments, he was a beloved family man. He is survived by us his children, Magdalena and Bosco and six grandchildren: Ethan, Elliott, Zoe, Ignatius, Emeric, Zophia, who will forever cherish his memory.

Dad was also a pillar of his community and his parishes, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. His involvement in marriage preparation seminars for many years at the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong demonstrated his commitment to his faith and service. Those who knew him admired his humility, his faith, and his unwavering sense of integrity.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate Dad’s life at a Catholic mass on July 3, 2024, 12 noon Eastern Time at St Agnes Tsao Catholic Parish in Markham, Ontario, Canada.  In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that donations be made to Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation or Mon Sheong Foundation for Seniors, causes close to his heart.

Though Dad is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him. He leaves behind a world made brighter by his presence and a community enriched by his kindness. He is now living in eternity in the Glory of God the Father.

Rest in peace, Dad. May you be reunited with Mom in Heaven.

**A Tribute to Shai Ming Chan** It is with a heavy heart that I write this tribute to Shai Ming Chan, Bosco and Maggie's dad. Shai Ming was a kind, friendly, and good man. Polly and I fondly remember meeting him and having great conversations over tea and dinners in Winnipeg. During our university days, Bosco and I enjoyed his warm presence and inspiring stories about his academic achievements in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Shai Ming's kindness and friendliness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Our deepest condolences go out to Bosco, Maggie, and the entire Chan family. May you find comfort in your memories and strength in the love Shai Ming shared with all of you. Ken & Polly
