Scott A. Wagar, 72 of Troy, passed away unexpectedly in Albany on August 25, 2021. He had planned to move the following week to the Bay Area of California to live closer to his son's family and his grandchildren, and was looking forward to the move.
Born in Troy, Scott lived most of his life in Rotterdam and was a graduate of Mohonasen High School and Union College. He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War era, with postings in North Dakota and South Carolina. Upon his discharge, he returned to the Capital District and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in the late 1990s. Over the course of his life he traveled extensively throughout the United States, and visited Canada and the Bahamas. He was married for over 40 years to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Wagar, until Barbe's death in 2013, after a long illness. Scott served as a devoted caretaker for Barbe throughout her illness. He was a loving father to his son Scott and daughter-in-law, Julianne, and grandfather to grandchildren, Wynter and Ori.
Scott loved music and played guitar, banjo, and harmonica in a number of local bands beginning in high school. Most recently, he performed with a veterans' choir through the Stratton VA Hospital in Albany. He was an expert at music trivia and especially treasured his memories of concerts from the 1960s at venues such as the Aerodrome and the R.P.I. Fieldhouse. Scott will be remembered for his kindness and gentle spirit; sense of humor; keen memory of Capital District places and lore; and devotion to his family and friends. In addition to his wife Barbe, Scott was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Donald Wagar; and his beloved companion animals, Sammy, Bootsy, Mr. Johnson, Tabby, and Toby. In addition to his son and his son's family, he is survived by brother, Donald Wagar (Holly) of Clifton Park; sister, Cheryl Smith (Bob) of Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews. Scott donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College. Memorial donations may be made to the music-education organization TeachRock at teachrock.org/donate.
