She never needed words to tell her story. Her smile spoke of joy, her life spoke of courage, and her strength reminds us all to never stop believing.

Savannah had a way of teaching you things without ever saying a word. She taught us that joy isn't dependent on circumstances, that strength can come wrapped in the sweetest smile, and that sometimes the greatest victories are simply refusing to let anyone else decide what is possible for you.

For 21 years, Savannah made a habit of proving predictions wrong. She faced more battles than seemed fair, yet somehow continued to meet the world with a smile that could light up a room and a spirit that refused to be defined by limitations. If someone thought they knew what Savannah would or wouldn't do, she seemed to take it as a personal challenge to prove otherwise. She would do things her way, in her own time, and on her own terms.

She loved fiercely and found happiness in the things that were uniquely hers: her Momma, worshipping her God, good Mexican food, magazines, riding in the back seat of Daddy's truck with Journey blaring through the speakers, and a love for horses that was all her own. She was equal parts strength and sweetness, determination and joy, a cowgirl princess through and through.

Savannah's life reminds us that a meaningful life isn't measured by the things the world says we should be able to do. It's measured by the love we give, the joy we create, the lives we touch, and the courage with which we face whatever comes our way.

Perhaps that's Savannah's greatest lesson, and the reminder she leaves for all of us:

Never stop believing.

Savannah's legacy will live on through Savannah Station, a place born from her love of horses, carrying her name and a little bit of that Savannah magic forward. A fitting tribute to a cowgirl princess who spent 21 years showing us just how much is possible when you refuse to let anyone else write your story.

I wanted to share a recollection of Savannah that still makes me smile. Athena and Jerry had made vacation plans and didn’t realize that their departure coincided with Savannah’s graduation from Kelly’s program at EFSHS. Had it not been for an email from me to Athena about something completely unrelated, they would have been wheels up! It was so nice to celebrate Savannah’s accomplishment with them the following morning. Another thing that stands out to me was Savannah’s wonderfully unexpected teenage way of letting me know when she was not having any of my planned intervention! If she found something I was presenting unappealing, she would simply, quietly, and very appropriately look away. The message was unmistakable. It was such a quintessential teenage response! Savannah knew what she liked, and she knew what she didn’t like. Most importantly, she knew how to communicate that to me unequivocally. I loved that about her. Those moments showed so much of Savannah’s personality, and they are among the memories of her that still make me smile. Debbie Skruch

We knew Savannah from the time she was a young child and she, Jerry and Athena quickly became family to us. Savannah truly was a special soul that touched so many lives. She will truly be missed but her spirit lives on with us in so many ways! We love you Savannah!

It is hard to find the right words to describe what Savannah meant to our family, because some of the most meaningful relationships in life simply cannot be explained with words. When Clem became part of the Tuesday group at Savannah Station, he joined three incredible girls. Over time, those four became more than just kids who happened to ride horses together on Tuesday evenings. They became a little team. They learned together, grew together, celebrated each other’s accomplishments, and shared a bond that was uniquely theirs. We always joked that it was “Clem and his Angels,” like Charlie’s Angels—Clem and his three girls. It was something that always made us smile. I don’t think any of us ever imagined how much that little joke would someday mean. Savannah and Clem may not have been able to show their friendship in the ways most people expect friends to. There weren’t always conversations or the typical things we associate with friendship. But one of the things these kids have taught me is that love and friendship don’t require words. You could see it in the way they were comfortable together, the way they recognized each other, and simply in the way they shared space and experiences together. They understood friendship in their own way, and maybe there is something all of us can learn from that. Savannah was also so much more than one of Clem’s teammates. She was the namesake and inspiration behind Savannah Station. Because of Savannah, a place was created that has given so many children and families opportunities they may have never had otherwise. It became a place where kids could get on a horse and experience freedom, confidence, accomplishment, belonging, and friendship. Our family is one of those families. Because of Savannah and the legacy created in her name, Clem found a place where he belongs. He found people who celebrate him exactly as he is. He found horses he loves, people who believe in him, and three Tuesday teammates who became his friends. As a parent, there is no way I could ever adequately say thank you for that. Athena and Jerry, I cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing your daughter. But I hope throughout the difficult days ahead, and for many years to come, you are reminded of just how much your Savannah mattered. Her life mattered. She made a difference. And her story isn’t ending here. Every child who comes through the gates at Savannah Station will become another part of her legacy. Every first ride, every accomplishment that once seemed impossible, every smile from the back of a horse, every proud parent watching from the side, and every friendship formed there will carry a little piece of Savannah’s story forward. And our family will always carry a piece of her with us too. I will always be thankful that Savannah and Clem’s paths crossed. I will always be thankful for those Tuesday evenings and for that special little group of four. We used to jokingly call them “Clem and his Angels.” Now one of his angels truly is watching from above. Savannah, thank you for being Clem’s teammate. Thank you for being his friend. Thank you for the memories our families were fortunate enough to share. And thank you for inspiring something that has changed Clem’s life and the lives of so many others. There will always be an empty place in the Tuesday group that no one else can fill, but there will also always be a place for Savannah in our hearts. Ride free, sweet Savannah. You will forever be one of Clem’s Angels. With all our love, Cody, Melissa & Clem

I feel truly lucky to have known Savannah. I miss hearing her come through the doors (and down the halls!) of Special Care. I loved her hugs and how she would only let you go when she was ready. I also loved her dedication to magazines. We all loved her. Thank you for sharing her with us. You all will forever be in our thoughts and we will always be here for you all. OXOXO
