I didn't know Sam well, but remember what a gracious, kind and loving soul he was from the summer of 2007 when, together with another St. Joseph's parent, the three of us lead and chaperoned a group of middle school children, including our own (I believe it was Audrey who came with us), on an Agape service learning trip. We travelled together in the church mini-bus and Sam said a pretty vigorous, "No thank you!"to driving! Thankfully though, he was endlessly helpful to me as I drove such a beast for the first time - keeping an eye out for directions, keeping high energy passengers happy and occupied and more. In the Bellingham area, we joined our children in learning about the hard realities of life as a migrant worker. Much of the the work we did was not easy - like the experience of picking blueberries for hours in the hot sun (not the fun experience of a family adventure, but a taste of the backbreaking reality of harvesting produce day in and day out). Sometimes the kids got tired, discouraged or frustrated, and Sam was one of those people who could immediately be a patient and understanding salve to weariness, as well as a cheerleader who could coax out just a little more energy. He was so easy and such a joy to work with and brought peace and warmth to the group. It is so sad that the world lost such a beautiful husband, father, son and friend far too soon. My deepest condolences to you Julie, Andrea and Audrey and to all the family and friends who loved and cherished Sam. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to spend that week experiencing his goodness.

My name is Ridah, I worked for Sam as a Private Caregiver. Sam was a man who was not defined by the disease he had. He was highly competitive in everything he did.. Whether it was exercising or playing games he wanted to be on top of it all. I remember when we used to do Yoga and it was time to do standing exercises, he would throw away the walker and trusted me to hold him when he was about to fall. Even smiling about it when I tell him that I was not strong enough to hold him when he's about to fall.. He taught me how to play cards which was part of the routine in the Smith house. Julie and the girls you did a great job taking care of Sam and the most high will reward you. That is Karma you have sown and it will be given back to you. Rest in Peace Sam Smith.

I had known Sam for over 35 years. He was always smiling and hospitable and happy. Our families used to go to Ft. Warden every November; Sam would be out in the rain playing soccer with all the kids. Sam was an incredible tennis player. He was smart and dedicated to his family. I am fortunate to have known him.

I met Sam and Julie through our Parkinson's Disease Support Group. Sadly, we learned that Sam did not have PD but instead PSP. I think it was at the annual Parkinson's Walk / fund raiser that I saw Sam and Julie again. They invited me to their home to play cards from time to time. Sam was a very proficient Cribbage player. He loved the game as much as I did and so it began that I would come and visit from time to time to get schooled by Sam - actually I managed to win a game or two. I so wish that I had come more often. We ended up changing the game to the less challenging Kings Corner card game. My wife and I have picked up playing Kings Corner since learning it from Sam and Julie. Of course, I think of Sam every time we play. I will never forget that when Sam and I last played cards and I was leaving, Sam took/shook my hand and wouldn't let go. We had great eye contact - and I could see/feel a lot of love and joy emanating from him to me. It filled me with joy to think that I had given him some joy and happiness despite his condition and such a small effort on my part. Lots of love to Sam and Julie -Bill
