Samuel Cooley
February 5th, 1993 - May 5th, 2020
February 5th, 1993 - May 5th, 2020
My beautiful baby brother, Samuel Reed Cooley, succumbed to his addiction and passed away peacefully on May 5th, 2020 at the age of 27. More than siblings, we were teammates through all that we endured together, our love sustained each other. I have always felt he saved me. Being Sam’s big sister gave me an outlet, something to hold dear and a sense of purpose throughout a turbulent childhood. Sam’s belief in my goodness and worth, having him look up to me, has made me who I am.
Over the past two years, Sam thrived in recovery and was able to reach his potential as his true self. He got fit and healthy, completed his college degree in Marketing, learned to drive, built a new community of friends in West Palm Beach, won employee of the month at a private aviation company where he worked, and even secured a new job set to start this summer. He was hopeful and positive about his future, and I will remember him as the most generous, silly, pure-hearted, and gregarious Yankee fan who always made me laugh.
I am eternally proud of who he is and what he overcame. It’s a massive challenge to recover from this addiction for any period of time, but Sam did, and I am so grateful he lived out his last years with courage and intention. Though my heart is shattered, I take comfort that we expressed our love to each other openly and frequently, and that we truly cherished every moment and memory.
Please share a memory or story of Sam below as well as upload any photos you have of my brother. No memory will be too big or too small – We are hoping to preserve the everyday snapshots and moments of his life. For those who do not have stories or memories, you can also offer sympathies, write a poem, share what Sam meant to you or express yourself any way you want. It would mean a lot to us to have these specific stories and memories from his friends and loved ones in writing.

Dear Sam, It's your birthday and we miss you! Although your life was way too short, you brought joy to more people than I can hope to do in my longer life. You spoke the truth with humor and kindness. And you continue to inspire us to keep working hard every day, against our obstacles. Thank you Sam, we love you.

It's me again. I think of Sam every day and he is sorely missed at work. I know he is with us in our hearts and souls. He always made us smile. You are still with us even in spirit. Never to be forgotten. Nancy Hatfield

One of my favorite weekends of the year was our annual camping trip to Lake George. I'm still not sure Sam really enjoyed the whole tent outdoor thing but we camped out, played our annual miniature golf tournament and had a final morning breakfast in the same diner for over 10 years. The biggest problem with Sam was that he only ate Pizza, Salami and Hot Dogs ( there is no pizza at camp grounds), one year I brought the hot dogs to the table with chopped onion on the same plate, we then had a lengthy discussion about whether or not the onions touched the hot dogs. As I recall, I lost the argument and had to go back rinse the hot dogs and but them on a separate plate. Sam was a wonderful guy, I'll always be sad that he didn't have a chance to grow into the wonderful man he surely would have become

Lauren, I cannot believe that I am just hearing this sad sad news of Sam’s passing. I taught both you and Sam at the Epiphany school many years ago! What great kids you were!!! Lauren you were truly idolized by Sam and were the best big sister. I have such fond memories of both of you! You were a strong girl back then and I know you will get through this somehow. Please know that I’m thinking of you and your dad. Miss O’Connell Xo

My memories of Sam are wrapped up in the family get-togethers in Cohoes. By the time Sam came along I was a young father with a busy family (as we all were). The wonderful trips to Cohoes were filled with lots of children who I recognized but never go to know well. Later as personalities emerged I began to know Sam and Lauren better. Sam was quiet and kind, he often spoke to me in a way that pulled me into his family's life, so did Lauren. I appreciated that. During our long drives back to Trenton we would always included Michael, Sam, and Lauren in our conversations about family. We looked forward to seeing Sam at the picnics and weddings. I will miss him. Sam's affectionate smiles, sincere hugs, and quiet manner are unforgettable. They are fondly etched into my memory. He used to greet us with a smile and a hug at all family gatherings, both public and private. One of my fondest memories is watching him come into the Cooley household on Manor Avenue and move about the room smiling, greeting, and hugging family members. After dinner, in appreciation for the meal, I liked to help wash the dishes and neaten up the kitchen. Sam would often come in and offer to help. While we chatted away the whole time, it gave me an opportunity to get to know what a respectful, honest, and loving personality he was developing. I wish we could have spent more time with him-perhaps in the future I can. The Bible likens death to sleep, so I hope to see him again when he is awakened.
