Ronald A. Militello, aged 89, was born on August 18, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, and peacefully departed this world on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his loving family by his side. Ron was surrounded by his two sons, John Michael and Matthew, daughter-in-law Elizabeth, and two of his six grandchildren, Luke and Gabriella.

Ron's early years were spent in the heart of Detroit's East Side, growing up as the eldest among ten siblings in a vibrant Italian family. His strong work ethic emerged at a young age when, by the tender age of eight, he was already assisting his grandfather in selling fruits and vegetables throughout downtown Detroit. Growing up in a traditional Italian-American household, it was only natural for him to serve as an altar boy on Sundays. Unsurprisingly, after graduating from St. Joseph High School in Detroit, he pursued further studies in philosophy at the seminary. In 1958, he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. Mary's College in Crown Point, Indiana. Ron's thirst for knowledge continued as he obtained a master's degree in education from Wayne State University.

Ron embarked on his teaching career at Divine Child High School before transitioning to Lincoln Park High School in 1965, where he imparted knowledge in various subjects. He remained at Lincoln Park High School until 1973, when he became the assistant principal at Menominee High School; he moved his young family ten hours north to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Ron continued to dedicate himself to education in Menominee until 1989, holding positions as the high school principal and interim Superintendent. In late 1989, he embraced the role of Superintendent at the Alba school district in Alba, Michigan, where he served for a decade until his retirement in 1999.

After retiring, Ron enjoyed many fulfilling years in the Traverse City area of Michigan before relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2008 to be closer to his son Matthew's family. Ron is survived by his son John Michael (Michelle) and two granddaughters, Gabriella and Cecelia, as well as his son Matthew (Elizabeth) and four grandsons, Dominic, Luke, Gabriel, and Oscar. His cherished siblings include Janet (Bill) Willoughby, Grace (Bill) Lowe, Leo (Phyllis) Militello, Mary Ann (Mike) Van Houzen, Santo (Cathy) Militello, Michael (Patricia) Militello, Rosalie Lohr, and over three dozen beloved nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Blanca Rosa Militello (2021), his brothers, Tony (Connie) and Joe (2019), as well as his parents, Grace (2017) and Leo (2001).

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Transitions Life Care at https://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/. Transitions LifeCare played a pivotal role in ensuring both Ron and his wife, Rose, received the dignity and comfort they deserved in their final days.

It was Ron's heartfelt wish not to have a traditional memorial service. He opted for a living wake after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, humorously remarking, "Why have a party that I can't attend!" In April of this year, his immediate family, including his brothers and sisters, gathered for a weekend of sharing memories with Ron, allowing them to say their goodbyes. To honor Ron's memory, we posted THIS living tribute, providing an opportunity for his friends and former students to share their thoughts and stories. So, please post your story about Ron and add a photo too!

We will be posting a video of Ron soon. Stay tuned!

Ron's lifelong commitment to education leaves an enduring legacy in the hearts of his students and his family. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

It is so wonderful and not surprising to hear such wonderful memories from so many on my brother Ron. He truly cared about his family, students, staff, neighbors and all those with whom he interacted. He inspired me as an educator to provide the best I could for my students. He so enjoyed being around family and friends and always made my children and grandchildren feel so much love. He will be missed

So sorry to hear this.. I spent many days in Mr, Militello's office in grade school. He was very understanding and always took the time to talk with me and get an understanding of where I was coming from. We had talks of respecting others and how to get through the day without being off task. I appreciate the time I had with him as our principal at Alba and hope your family heals from this passing. ❤️

To the Militello family, Thank you for sharing Mr. Ron at Brighton Gardens. Ron was one of the biggest joys when coming into work and would put a smile on my face without having to try. Whether he was sharing a story from his youth, going out to eat, or sharing his knowledge and kindness with the world. Like a candle he warmed our hearts with his kind gestures and words. I will fondly look back on the days I got to spend with Ron and remember how sweet he is. Thank you again for sharing him with Brighton Gardens, and I pray for your family’s healing.

Dear Militello family, Growing up in Menominee was the best, and the best part of that memory was the memory of the people. My mom Diane was on the school board. And doing so became good life long friends of Ron and Rose. So many dinners and visits over so many years. Your parents and grand parents that you know were the best. What you may not know is how many lives they touched and enriched. Rest in peace Ron, I will alway cherish my memories of growing up and Ron and Rose are in those memories. So sorry for you loss.
