March 24th, 1954 - January 23rd, 2024
Roger Lee Whickum Sr., born on March 24, 1954, bid farewell to the world on January 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and dedication. Born to Conserlean Whickum and Mack Mays Sr., also loved and raised by Gurnit Dixon, Roger was a cherished individual whose presence touched the lives of many.
A proud graduate of Jesup Scott High School in 1954, Roger excelled not only academically but also on the tennis and wrestling teams. As a young adult, Roger took his love for fitness to new heights, participating in body building competitions. His pursuit of knowledge continued, culminating in an associate's degree in horticulture from Owens Technical College in 1996. In 2011, he became a certified personal trainer, and in 2012, he earned another associate's degree in Personal Training from Stautzenberger College.
Roger's career was as diverse as his interests. From serving as a telephone operator for AT&T to establishing his own enterprise, Emerald Lawn and Landscaping, Roger's impact resonated in the local community. His commitment to his work extended beyond business, as he volunteered with organizations such as the Padua Center of Toledo, contributing to their Urban Agriculture Program. Roger left an indelible mark wherever he went. His passion for fitness, nutrition, gardening, and the beauty of life defined him as a man with a profound appreciation for the world around him.
A lifelong learner, Roger was a man of immense wisdom and words. His adventurous spirit and disciplined morals made him stand out in every endeavor. He valued and adored his family, survived by his children, Rosalyn, Roger, Ranita and Raymond, along with granddaughter Kimani. His siblings, Myron, Reginald, Henry, Judy, Sharon, Debra, Cathie, Vicky, Marlene, and Charlene, and a cherished host of nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors will carry his memory forward.
Roger took immense pride in his children, not just for their accomplishments, but for the strength of their character. He was a man who would go to any lengths for his family, embodying the values of love, loyalty, and selflessness. In his departure, Roger leaves behind a void that can only be filled by the memories of the extraordinary life he led and the impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him.
