Roger K. Bechtel, 62, passed away at 2:30am on May 10, 2021. He was at his home in Tucson, AZ, surrounded by love. He departed this shore with courage and dignity after a brief but intense battle with ALS.

Born in Indianapolis, IN on November 19, 1958, he was the son of the late Carroll Bechtel and Shirley Hawkins Bechtel. He was a 1981 graduate of DePauw University, and he also had degrees from NYU Law (J.D., 1986), Yale University School of Drama (M.F.A., 1989) and Cornell University (Ph.D., 1999).

Possessed with a brilliant mind and driven by lifelong curiosity, Roger traversed a distinguished and adventurous career path in arts, letters and the law. As an actor he appeared in productions at the Red Barn Theatre, Detroit Repertory Theater, Yale Repertory Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Minneapolis Fringe Festival and many other regional and Off-Broadway venues. He was a published author and playwright, as well as an award-winning director, staging productions in Minneapolis, Chicago, Portland, Anchorage and New York, and founding the experimental theater groups Zeitgeist Café Theater in New York City, and the Big Picture Group in Chicago. With a lifelong passion for Shakespeare, his proudest achievement in the theater was playing Hamlet, a feat he accomplished three times. He was a voracious reader whose favorite writers included Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky and Roberto Bolaño, as well as a lifelong competitive runner, having completed multiple marathons including New York City, Twin Cities, California International, Marine Corps and Rocket City.

For nearly two decades Professor Bechtel was an inspirational educator for artistic young minds studying acting and directing. He taught at Illinois Wesleyan University, Miami University of Ohio, Bowdoin College, and Carleton College, where he was head of the theater and dance department when he retired from academia in 2018. At age sixty, and over thirty years after graduating from NYU Law School, Roger fulfilled another lifelong goal by passing the Minnesota Bar exam and becoming a public defender in Crow Wing County, MN, providing legal representation for individuals who would not otherwise be able to afford a private attorney.

Despite the devastating ALS diagnosis Roger faced his final challenge with the same grit and resourcefulness that marked the chosen challenges of his life, and he remained engaged, in the moment, and intellectually active until the end. In the final months of his life he wrote several chapters of his autobiographical manuscript, read numerous books on spiritual teachings, and expanded upon a lifelong curiosity of Buddhist writings and philosophy.

Roger cherished words, language and literature, but words alone cannot convey the impact on others of a life so well lived. He was a fiercely loyal friend, a deeply dedicated husband, a loving and devoted father. He was endlessly curious, eternally amazed, fastidiously organized, tireless, funny and fun. He was a seeker and defender of truth, and an outraged unveiler of injustice. He was possessed of a diamond wit. He was tenacious, brilliant, determined, occasionally irascible. He was a true friend. His warm and resonant Shakespearean voice left a palpable aural imprint that ever rings on in the ears of all who knew and loved him. The distorted and displaced atoms from Roger’s enormous presence, gigantic smile, mellifluous voice, piercing intellect and generous spirit will not soon regain their shape.

Roger is survived by his wife, Christin Lindberg; his children, Harper Bechtel and Carson Bechtel (Northfield, MN); sister, Beth Miller (Carmel, IN), nieces Mimi Caron, Skylar Thompson and nephews Derek Caron, Dexter Caron, Hunter Caron, and Graham Caron. He is also survived by best friends, Michael McCarty, Gordon Reinhart, and Helen Stotler.

A private celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the ALS Association, Arizona Chapter or Southern Poverty Law Center

Roger, you were one of my closest friends. I thank you for a near quiet decade of friendship. Your generous spirit was life saving to me. I thank you for replying to my letters in your last days. To this day, you are my favorite conversationalist of all time—your enthusiasm and compassion will be deeply felt and deeply missed. I love you so much my friend.

In 1981, I overlapped with Roger during his stint at the Marion Co. Prosecutors Office in downtown Indianapolis. We were both in transitional periods trying to figure out where we were supposed to be. He had decided not to start the Circle in the Square graduate program and was applying to NYU law school. The last time we touched base, probably in 2015, he told me he was thinking about “the path not taken” and asked about my experience as a litigation attorney. It”s fun to find out he did jump to the other path of law. Although we spent time together for only a few months, he left an indelible impression on me, as he did on so many others. I am so sorry for his loved ones that his life was too short.

What a beautiful site to see! This tribute to Roger Bechtel! I found it “out of the blue” today and it’s wonderful to read all the wonderful remembrances. Roger and I were great friends and classmates at the Yale School of Drama from the fall of 1986 through the spring of 1989. He was a magnificent contributor to the artistic community of YSD. So gifted, so well respected, and so very well appreciated. His strength and talent and humor and warmth lifted all of us throughout our time there. For me, Roger was a very special friend— someone who I could trust and share quiet restorative time with during the crazy hazy days of drama school. We did many plays together and his commitment to excellence always brought out the best in me. I am very grateful to count Roger as one of my “angels” in life! Here’s a video clip that features Roger during our classic “League Scenes” presentation for our colleagues and friends at YSD in April of 1989. I had the great good fortune to be paired with him in a fun scene where he played many zany, wacky characters as only Roger could do! He was brilliant in every way and I am so happy to feel his presence now as I recall so many great moments that we shared. Sending very best warm wishes to Chris, and all his family and friends. https://youtu.be/8QMDg3U5pgU

While we'd not stayed in touch, and we weren't close with Roger, my wife, Cheryl Williams, and I had the honor of sharing the stage with him in what had been one of his earliest, if not his very first production of his professional career. In early 1990, not long after he'd graduated from the Yale School of Drama, the previous spring, Roger played the title role in 'Hamlet', at Detroit's now-defunct Attic Theatre, in a production that was directed by his dear friend, Gordon Reinhard. Cheryl was his Ophelia, while I'd played Laertes, and I recently came across some photos from that show which we'd taken, onstage, during our technicals rehearsal, as well as backstage, during the run of the show. I'd actually had the pleasure of working a bit longer, and somewhat more closely, with Roger, than many others in our cast, since Gordon had required Roger and I to begin rehearsing a full week earlier than the rest, in order to choreograph our fencing duel and fight scene at the end of the play, which, I must say, still ranks as the absolute tightest, and most thrilling, work of stage combat in my career. I'd been sharing some of these pictures with a number other actors from that production whom we've stayed in touch with, and, on a whim, I'd thought I'd try and track down Roger, in order to do so with him, as well. I cannot tell you just how shocked and saddend we were to learn of Roger's untimely passing, and we'd like to express our deepest condolences to you and your children. We hope and pray that you all may find peace. This site apparently will only allow me to post a single photo with this rememberance, but a have a couple of others, along with a review or or two of that production which thought Roger's performance to be quite praiseworthy, that I'd be happy to share with you, Just let me know, and I'll send them your way.
