You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.
Robin McLaurin Williams was born on July 21, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, and became one of the most versatile and celebrated entertainers of his generation. Beginning his career as a stand-up comedian in San Francisco during the late 1970s, Williams quickly gained recognition for his improvisational brilliance, rapid-fire wit, and ability to shift between characters and accents seamlessly. His breakthrough came with the television series "Mork & Mindy" (1978-1982), where he starred as an eccentric alien, captivating audiences with his infectious energy and innovative comedic style.
Williams successfully transitioned to film, earning critical acclaim and numerous accolades throughout his career. He demonstrated remarkable range across genres, starring in acclaimed dramas such as "Dead Poets Society" (1989), "The Fisher King" (1991), "Good Will Hunting" (1997)—for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor—and "One Hour Photo" (2002). He also found success in comedic roles in films like "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993) and "Night at the Museum" series. His voice work in animated films, particularly as the Genie in Disney's "Aladdin" (1992), became iconic and introduced his talents to new generations.
Throughout his career, Williams earned four Academy Award nominations, two Emmy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and numerous other honors. Beyond entertainment, he was known for his humanitarian efforts, frequently performing benefit concerts and actively supporting various charitable causes including Comic Relief and disaster relief efforts. He was married three times and had three children. Despite his tremendous professional success and public persona as a joyful entertainer, Williams privately battled depression and addiction. He passed away on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63. His death left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and his millions of fans worldwide, who remembered him not only for his comedic genius and dramatic prowess but also for his generosity of spirit and ability to bring laughter and light to audiences across the globe.
