Robert Anthony Sexton, Jr. March 4, 1943 – August 22, 2017 Robert Sexton, an American writer and artist who shunned gallery representation and carved his own path to success, has died. He was 74. Mr. Sexton began writing and self-publishing books in 1970. His first book was “The Morning People”. He had editions of his original drawings reproduced in lithography, framed and sold these works at Harvest Festivals around the West. Later, he made his work available directly to collectors through advertisements in such magazines as, Yankee, Southern Living, The Smithsonian, Cowboys and Indians, and Coastal Living. His “Robert Sexton, An American Romantic” gallery on Grant Ave. in San Francisco’s legendary North Beach exhibited his entire collection and fulfilled the many orders for his art. Mr. Sexton would begin his creative process by writing prose or poetry and then create an accompanying drawing with a technique called stippling. The strength of his work lies not only in its sentimental appeal, but also in the pristine snapshots of life he put down in pen and ink. These black and white portraits speak to many people. Although a staunch liberal, he was especially honored to have had his work, “The Promise” read at Nancy Reagan’s funeral. Born in Montclair, NJ in l943 to Irene and Robert A. Sexton, Sr., he attended schools in Caldwell, NJ and went on to graduate from Montclair State University with a degree in English Literature. After serving in the US Air Force in the late 60’s, he taught high school English in North Caldwell, NJ. In the mid 70’s he moved to San Francisco, working at Macy’s while writing and drawing at night. It was here that his self-taught artistry came to fruition. Intelligent, articulate and well-read, his favorite author was F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was always lively and interesting to discuss literature, art and politics with him. His many interests included travel, his beloved West Highland terrier always at his side. An avowed Francophile, he once owned a remodeled farmhouse in Augers-en-Brie, outside of Paris where he spent many months each year. He had a passion for cars, which he collected. He had both classic automobiles and a huge assortment of collectible model cars, specializing in 1/43 model cars & promotional models of full sized autos from all over the world. He attended the Paris Auto Show each year, always excited about the new cars on display. Mr. Sexton is survived by his sister, Mary Ellen Sexton of Asheville, NC, and his brothers, Peter Sexton of Winston-Salem, NC and Tom Sexton of Salisbury, NC, plus several nieces and nephews and many beloved friends. In each artist, there is a spark of the Divine that drives their creativity. His was clear and true and will forever shine.

After recently retiring and having leisure time, I was looking over some of my books that I haven't read in a long time. I reread Journey's of the Human Heart, All The Way Home, & An American Romantic. They were purchased at a yearly Harvest Festival in Riverside, Ca. in the early 90's, where Mr. Sexton had a booth with his beautiful art. For a few years, we visited him there and he signed each book. I purchased a framed "Postcard/Sunday Afternoon" print for my dear Aunt for Christmas one year. Since her passing in 2002, I have had that lovely print hanging in my home. I typed Mr. Sexton's name to find out if he still had a gallery or online store where I could purchase another of my favorites. Sadly, I found this obituary. I offer my sincere condolences to his family & friends, who must continue to miss him. His beautiful gift has touched many, and continues to have meaning.

I know I am several years late. But I just heard of Robert Sextons passing. I am saddened that I've never got the chance to meet him. His works was a huge influence on my life. I've discovered one of his books at a thrift store. From that point on I've collected his other writings that were published. His beautiful art, poetry and writings helped me through the toughest times of my life. His works inspired me to look at the world in a different light and inspired me to live my best life. When I've heard of his passing, the news hit me hard. It was like losing a friend.

I was saddened this evening by learning of Mr. Sextons passing. My wife and I are great admirers of his work and his soul. We obtained two of his works the last time we were in San Francisco (years ago). They beautify our walls and remind us of our love daily. His art personally inspired my own writing efforts. Though not a professional level, I write with my soul for my loved ones.Thank You Robert, Rest in God.

I was one of Mr. Sexton's high school English class students in 1965-66. (Sorry--he's strictly "Mr. Sexton" to me!) He made a big impact on my life and now I can't tell him directly. Here's a small section of the letter I wrote him anyway: I am thankful that our paths crossed, however briefly, and to realize we influence each other in ways that are often not revealed to us. Perhaps I, too, have made my own hidden impacts despite everything. I hope I have.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mr. Sexton’s death. I met him years ago at an art fair. I bought his book, Journeys of the Human Heart, and his framed print , To One So Fine And Bold. I had two young boys, and the poem spoke to my heart. I could tell Mr. Sexton had a kind, sensitive heart. I liked him immediately. I looked him up recently, because I’ve made friends with a young couple with two darling young boys, and felt they would love the poem too. It broke my heart to see Mr Sexton just passed away this last August. My prayers and thoughts are with Mr Sexton’s loved ones. He added beauty and love to our world.
