A life devoted to the art of storytelling
Robert Selden Duvall was born on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California, and became one of the most respected and accomplished actors in American cinema and television. Growing up in the American South, he served in the United States Army Signal Corps during the Korean War before pursuing his passion for acting. He studied at Principia College in Illinois and later trained at the American Conservatory Theater under legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg in New York, where he became known for his dedication to the craft of acting.
Duvall's career spanned over seven decades, during which he demonstrated remarkable range and depth, moving seamlessly between supporting roles, lead characters, and later directorial work. He became one of the most prolific character actors in Hollywood, known for his distinctive voice, intensity, and commitment to authenticity in his roles. He worked with some of cinema's greatest directors, including Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Joel Coen, Francis Ford Coppola, and Peter Bogdanovich.
His breakthrough came in the late 1960s and early 1970s with iconic roles that would define his career. Other landmark roles included Major Frank Burns in M*A*S*H (1970), his unforgettable portrayal of Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979), and his Oscar-winning performance as Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies (1983).
Throughout his career, Duvall earned numerous accolades including one Academy Award for Best Actor, multiple Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and nominations that reflected his consistent excellence. He was also a gifted filmmaker, directing several documentaries and films including The Apostle (1997), which he also starred in and which earned critical acclaim. His personal interests extended beyond acting to include ranching, riding, and a deep appreciation for American culture and history.
