Don’t Cry Because It’s Over, Smile Because It Happened.  Richard T. Ramsey, (Dick), “The Rams,” Grandaddy Ramsey, or known to so many Gatlinburg-Pittman High School students as Mr. Ramsey, age 74, passed from this life on Saturday morning, April 16th.

He was gentle, kind, caring, loving, generous, honest and brilliant.  He loved jokes, puns, quotes and good conversation with friends.  His sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew him.

When we think of him, we will think of books, music, algebraic equations, tennis and all things competitive. Dick had a passion for learning, reading, teaching and coaching.  He cherished every moment that he was able to play or watch those he loved give their best effort.

He was most happy when surrounded by Nature and The Great Smoky Mountains. He lived each day grateful for what he had and for those who loved him.

Mr. Ramsey left a positive lasting impression on the hearts of his fellow teachers and his students and will be greatly missed by the Gatlinburg community.

He leaves behind his two daughters, who will miss him dearly, Susanne Henry (Neil) and Veronica Carney (Mike), along with his 5 grandchildren: Nola Mae, Elisa, Brennan, Isaiah, and Zach.  Most of all, Dick will be sorely missed by his wife and best friend of nearly 50 years, Nola Sue Ramsey.

As we say goodbye, we repeat back something he often said to us, “We all have our time on earth, enjoy yours!”

A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we would love to hear your memories and stories of Dick, as well as any message or condolences you might like to leave.

I’m so sorry to hear about Mr Ramsey!! I sure do love your parents! They have been wonderful neighbors and friends to my parents and our family as long as I can remember!! I’m was blessed to have Mr Ramsey as my Algebra and Geometry teacher. He was a wonderful teacher unfortunately I was not a great student! He did what he could to teach me math. lol it was not his lack of effort it was my lack of really caring about school!! He was always wonderful in class and such a funny man. A Great dry sense of humor!! I loved getting to come back to GPHS as the secretary and then getting to work with on a daily basis. Always so pleasant! Loved when he would play in those faculty basketball games! Very talented! But my most favorite thing is the way he loves his wife and 2 daughters and those grandchildren! He just lights up every time he could talk about you ALL! So proud of his family!! I’ve watched him be so excited watching you do your sports and just seeing that look of such pride on his face! I know each of you feel the same about him!! Mr Ramsey has made this world a better place and I’m so thankful that I got to be a small part of his wonderful life!! Prayers for your family for peace and comfort! Love to you all!

My condolences. Dick obviously grew up to be a remarkable person and teacher, and I remember him and his 4 brothers well, growing up as friends and neighbors in Oak Ridge.

I was so sorry to hear about Dick's death. I grew up on Outer Drive between the Ramsey house and Cedar Hill. Dick was my classmate at Cedar Hill, Jefferson Junior, and ORHS. I regret having lost touch with him over the years, but was delighted to share a table with him at our 50th reunion a few years ago. I wish I had been a fly on the wall in a few of his math classes. I also taught math and had a perpetual chalk line [from the chalk tray] across my rear. May the family have peace and be blessed with wonderful memories [I treasure my memories of Dick].

Dear Sue, Susanne, and Veronica, It was sad to hear of Dick's passing. He was a great teacher. He made me feel welcome when I first started at GP and we became good friends. It was an honor to know him and is a pleasure to known all of you. I know he was proud of his family.

It is so strange to learn that Mr. Ramsey was only 11 years older than me when I was his student, it seemed so much more then. He wrote a special midterm, with me in mind I will never forget that, I still got an "A" but no one else in the class passed, so he had to throw a curve on it. I really wish I had got to see him later in life to see what kind of teacher he became, it may have been rocky but we diffidently had a bond, I will miss him even though decades have passed.

I did learn that if you have multiple photos you would like to add, it’s easier to use the “Momentos” icon. Click next to profile at the top. You do not have to write a tribute and can add multiple photos at a time. Here is one of the Ramsey Brothers. Others can be found in the Momentos page as well.
