Richard “Papa” Joseph Carrillo, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2022, in Vacaville, CA surrounded by family. He was 87. Papa was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, sibling, storyteller, and friend who will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Rich was born in Platteville, CO to Edward Carrillo and Margaret Sanchez on May 5, 1934. He moved to San Jose, in 1949 and married Gloria Rocha in 1954. Rich and Gloria raised their family in San Jose among many relatives and spent vacations together at the family ranch in Mexico and skiing in Tahoe and Bend. Rich held many jobs to support his family, the majority working as a union painter in the Bay Area for 35 years. He later started a painting business with his late brother, Jim, in Bend, OR, before retiring as a stationary engineer at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. In 2001, Rich built his dream home in Angels Camp, CA where he became an avid golfer and later became a marshal at the Green Horn Creek golf course where he enjoyed schmoozing with fellow golfers and spending time with friends. He also volunteered time helping with events in downtown Angels Camp. In no particular order, these are some things that Rich cherished: His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; cheering for the San Francisco 49ers; pampering tomato and Thai basil seedlings in his garden; spending time with his family; sharing a “toot” and a scrumptious meal with friends; telling and re-telling stories about his humble beginnings and scrappy boyhood; lending an ear and offering advice and reassurance; fishing and hunting trips with the boys; and exploring the world with his family in the woods, the countryside, by water’s edge, on mountain slopes, and overseas. Rich delighted in dressing up with his chest puffed out in sartorial bliss, crooning a familiar Sinatra tune, and feeling like an accomplished and very lucky man to have lived a life surrounded by love and family. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Carrillo of San Jose; his daughter, Shelley Gleed of Seattle, WA; his son, Steve Carrillo and daughter-in-law, Cindy Carrillo of Bend; his daughter, Betsy Beavers and son-in-law, Erin Beavers of Vacaville; and his daughter, Vicki Banuelos of San Jose. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren (Andy, Rex, Spencer, Natalie, Corey, Jordan, Missy, Elena, and Olivia); four great-grandchildren (Ella, Zane, Leona, and Lyra); his siblings, Susan Carrillo, Tom Carrillo and Dorothy Savedra; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Rich’s family extends their sincere thanks to the NorthBay Hospice team for their compassionate care and assistance. Rich will be remembered at a private celebration of life in April. To honor him, family and friends may donate in his name to the Willow Glen Education Foundation, Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 8096, San Jose, CA 95155-8096.

I knew Rich through my father and the Painters Union. I lived when he would walk into our office with his wonderful smile and smooth talk. He and my parents knew each other all the way back from their years in Colorado. I am so sorry for the lost of this wonderful man.

Just saw this today. I enjoyed my time working with Richard at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose for over a decade before he retired. He was like a big brother to me, 20 years my senior. I was the Carpenter there at the time, but Richard taught me many things about my own craft in regards to finishing my work for painting. He had a wonderful eye for color and creativity. He was a joy to be around, always positive and supportive. We even road mountain bikes together! I ended up buying the same kind of Mazda truck he had too. All of us Engineers at the Hotel had a special nick-name for him which he cherished...we called him Old Cock! Eugene DiMaggio Miss you my friend!
