On Saturday, Oct. 5, the world lost Rhys Severe- a great man, a great husband, a great father, a great friend, a great educator, a great coach and a great spirit. Rhys died unexpectantly while on a road trip with his wife, Peggy Jennings-Severe. He left this world surrounded by Peggy, his good friends Jim and Lisa Werner and his dog Bochy. Rhys was born July 12, 1957 in Odessa, Texas and lived there until he was 8, when his parents Tex and Frances Severe made the bold decision to relocate to Modesto, California. It was in Modesto, that Rhys attended El Vista Elementary School, La Loma Junior High School, and Downey High School. Throughout his school years, Rhys was active in sports including youth bowling, baseball, and basketball. Of the three, baseball was his first love until he met and asked a girl, Peggy Jennings, to the Christmas dance in 1973. Eager to stretch his wings and not so eager to attend college yet, Rhys joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1975, where he served in Avionics as part of the Air Corp Wing. He was stationed in El Toro, California, Havelock, North Carolina and Fatima, Okinawa. It was while in the Marine Corp, that he established lifelong friends and developed an interest in countries and cultures other than his own. After the Marine Corp, Rhys moved to Chico to be with Peggy, who was attending graduate school at CSU, Chico. It was while attending Butte College, that Rhys began to find his true professional calling - teaching and coaching. Rhys graduated from CSU, Chico with a degree in Liberal Studies and a teaching credential. He was immediately hired by Durham Unified School District where he taught 6 th grade for 16 years and then served as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. Though he loved teaching his passion was coaching which he did often and well. Rhys coached basketball, baseball, and soccer. After a 2-year role as an Assistant Principal at Marsh Junior High, Rhys finished his career at his beloved Marigold Elementary School, where he severed as principle for 9 years. As full as his professional life was, Rhys's real joy was time spent with his family and friends, preferably outdoors. Rhys's family includes his wife of 39 years-Peggy Jennings-Severe, children: Annie Severe, Murat Karatekeli, Ben Severe, and soon-to-be daughter Megan Damman, grandchildren: Aydin and Sofie, sisters: Melinda Gordon and Kari Severe and brother- in-laws: Roy Gordon, Ross Jennings, Stu Jennings and Rich Grosvenor. He was also close to his four nephews and niece who stayed with he and Peggy during the summer. Rhys's circle of love was boundless and included his life-long friend Mark Lopes, members of Thursday night BPOT, and the Elks Bowling League and Lodge. He also counted many past students and co-workers as valued friends. A Celebration of Rhys's Life is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 beginning at 1:00 at Trinity United Methodist Church followed by a reception at Elks Lodge. The family has designated Shady Creek Outdoor Education Foundation for memorial contributions. These will go towards scholarships, as students have to raise the money to attend and this will help make it possible for more students. Rhys attended Shady Creek as a teacher for 17 years and as an administrator for over 5 years. Contributions can be made in his nature name at the camp, Rattlesnake Rhys.

I also served with Rhys and Bill Rivers on Okinawa in 1978/79! Very sorry to hear of his passing. We had a lot of fun on The Rock. I will forever cherish those memories! God bless you Rhys!

I served in the Marines with Rhys in 1978-79 on okinawa japan,we became fast friends, our mutual love for sports especially baseball,me being from massachusetts a big redsox fan and him loving the giants, we had a friendly rivalry,i even have a picture of him wearing a sox hat, anyways he got out of the marines well before me,i was stationed in north carolina when i received an invitation to his wedding, wish i could have gone but my marine obligations prevented that from happening, over the years we lost touch living our lives bringing up families, when i finally found him it was to late,i'm just glad that i got in touch with Ben who got right back to me and explained what had happened,i've told other friends of ours who were stationed with us...Sucks! but i take great pleasure in my memories of Rhys and seeing what a great life he went on to live with a great family who obviously loves and misses him very much...for what its worth i've never forgotten our time and i never will...forever your brother Bill Rivers...SEMPER FI

I first met Rhys 30 some years ago shortly after I met my wife Sue. As the husband of Sue's best friend, meeting him was a top priority I really hoped we would hit it off. No problem there, we quickly realized we had many common interests and I knew at once he was a great guy that I could look forward to many years of friendship with. Over the years we created so many memories, camping trips to the coast and mountains, first without kids, then with kids. Trips to Mendocino, Spain, fishing, hiking and so much more. Some of my best memories are barbeques at their house in Chico. Ribs, burgers, trout, no one could BBQ like Rhys. Later the social scene moved to Brice Creek and the Party Patio. One of the best weeks of my life was spent with Rhys building it, followed by years of visits there to fish, relax and socialize. It was amazing how many people visited there over the years. This is what I liked about Rhys, when he did something it wasn't just for him, but for all his friends and family, he was the kind of guy that was happiest bringing people together. These are memories I will always hold dear and regret the future memories that won't happen now that Rhys is gone. Happy trails buddy, you are sorely missed!

"Rattlesnake Rhys" was among the very best teachers and administrators that we had the honor of working with at Woodleaf / Shady Creek Outdoor School. He dedication to the students and the experiences that they had at camp was evident each week that he spent with us. He was kind, caring, and so much fun. We loved his stories and gentle manner. Thank you, Rattlesnake Rhys, for everything that you did for children. -Christopher & Shannon (Yeti & Quail)

Rhys - if things had gone differently, you would have woken up in your RV today near Boston. I was so excited for you to meet Brent since he had only met Peggy so far. We would have gone for a walk along the historic Minute Man trail between Lexington and Concord and then over to Walden Pond. But then life happened and now we are moving in a new direction. Brent and I still walked around Walden Pond today and I knew without a doubt that you were there with us. Xo, Ali.
