Rhea Eugenia Courtney
September 3rd - March 17th, 2023
September 3rd - March 17th, 2023
Rhea Eugenia Courtney (née Petrides) was born in Rockaway Beach, New York on September 3. She passed away on March 17, 2023 in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was a proud Greek-Cypriot and a first generation American on her father’s side. Rhea and her husband moved from Rockaway to Scottsdale with their 2 children in 2000 to be closer to her brother Dr. Savas Petrides and his wife Terry.
Rhea worked for 23 years as an insurance underwriter for Artex Risk Solutions Inc., a branch of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.
She was an avid film lover and had a passion for writing that she shared with many. She loved all things British, and considered herself anglophile. Rhea also loved to throw a good party (Bahama Mama Night, iykyk) and would whop everyone’s butt in a round of trivia.
She is survived by her husband of almost 35 years Richard “Mickey”, her proudest accomplishment- her children Rebecca and Matthew, her sister-in-law Terry, and her niece and nephew Sarah and Alexander.
The biggest hope her surviving family has for her is that she is enjoying a big Gin & Tonic with her parents and brother wherever they are.

Rhea and I attended Beach Channel High School in the mid-to-late 1970's. We were in a film making class together. The teacher put us students in groups of 4. Over the course of a semester, we had to script, act, film, produce, and edit a film. Rhea and I were two of the four members of one of those groups. You get to know a person pretty well during lengthy planning, filming, and editing sessions that extend over a few months. Rhea was smart, fun, and obviously very talented. Our group received an A on our film project. As often happens in life, Rhea and I lost touch for decades until this newfangled thing called Facebook allowed us to catch up with one another. While looking back at past posts today in the early morning hours while everyone else was sleeping, it occurred to me that I hadn't heard from Rhea in several months. Now I know why. To the Courtney family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope that as months turn into years, Rhea's memory is a blessing and a comfort.

Thank you Rhea for all the fond feelings and memories at the Kraus compound. I believe the soundtrack for many years was the Little Mermaid and The Lion King which seemed to be on a loop. Our children grew together with our Co-op pool parties celebrating our kids Birthdays together. Of course Mickey was always there and I think the first mashup name I knew, because MickeynRhea was one word. I know it always will be since that fabric went with everything. Rest in Peace and may Your family rest in that knowledge and share the Peace.

I met Rhea when she came to London for a Poldark event, a pre-screening of the final season at the British Film Institute. It was an exciting evening, seeing the stars of the show, meeting other fans from across the globe. Rhea came with her friend Melle and husband Mickey; I was lucky enough to meet them because of a mutual friend Celia, who was my "Knitdark buddy" - Knitdarks were my knitted Poldark dolls that appeared on the Graham Norton Show; Rhea knew about them and was adorable in her excitement to meet them. They all came out of my bag in a restaurant and surrounded her for a photo; it was a treasured moment! The following morning, we met again for a once in a lifetime breakfast with Debbie Horsfield, Poldark scriptwriter, organised by Celia. Rhea was so excited, as were we all! Since that memorable day in London, Rhea and I kept in touch, often because she wanted to order another knitted character. We shared smiles chatting on messenger as I made knitted Harry Styles, Luna Lovegood and Fili & Kili from the Hobbit. Rhea was charming, a warm, intelligent lady with a deep love for family. I was terribly sorry to hear she had passed, and send my condolences to Mickey and the children. I feel honoured to have met her.

I will always remember the summer birthday parties in the Kraus backyard and you and my Mom sitting around the dining room table laughing and planning wonderful events and the St Francis Follies. My Mom truly loved you both. I know they are together, singing and laughing up a storm. My love to you all . ❤️❤️❤️

I still can’t believe Rhea is gone. She and I were partners-in-crime for many, many years, and the most fun we had was writing the three or four shows we wrote for St Francis. We didn’t speak often, but often wrote back and forth. Our shared history was one we often chatted about. Gonna miss you, partner!

Rhea was always there at the theater along with her beautiful family. She was had a warm but sharp wit that I truly loved. She always took care of Mack with a warm laugh and smile. She always took time out to be there and help with whatever was needed. She and Mickey were always there supporting the theatre and families. I treasured her good humor. I loved that the Courtney family made sure the show went on. I hope her kids appreciate how involved their parents were in their lives, such a blessing in todays world. She will be missed by so many. Love, The Mackeys Laura, Hank and Mack
