For the first seven of the ten years that I was Script Producer, I was in love with the show and the characters. I found them a joy to create stories for.

Ray Kolle was one of Australian television's most quietly essential voices — a screenwriter whose words shaped the stories of millions without most viewers ever knowing his name. Born on July 1, 1941, one of ten siblings, Ray showed his hand early: at age ten, he asked his parents for a typewriter for Christmas, having already decided, with characteristic certainty, that he was going to be a writer. Before television found him, Ray immersed himself in literature, choosing to work in a bookshop over a music store because he believed it would bring him closer to the craft he loved. He pursued playwriting alongside his day job, eventually having his first musical, "Little Women," produced at Melbourne's Arts Theatre. In 1967, Ray began his television career writing comedy sketches for "In Melbourne Tonight." But it was his bold, unsolicited submission of a script to the ABC's pioneering serial "Bellbird" that launched his defining professional chapter. He was taken on as a writer and rose through the ranks to script editor and story editor, ultimately contributing to approximately 1,634 episodes between 1967 and 1977 — a staggering body of work that established him as one of the form's most disciplined craftsmen. Through the late 1970s and early 1980s, Ray freelanced extensively for Crawford Productions, writing for "The Sullivans" and "The Box," work that earned him a coveted AWGIE Award. He then joined Grundy's, where his career reached its zenith. From 1986 to 1992, as head writer and story editor of "Neighbours," Ray helped transform a struggling local soap into an international phenomenon. He created or co-created some of Australian television's most beloved characters — Harold Bishop, Madge, Charlene, Mrs. Mangel, Lou Carpenter, and many more — bringing wit, warmth, and genuine humanity to the fictional streets of Erinsborough. Ray also ran the story department at "Home and Away" from 1998 to 2000 and continued writing "Neighbours" scripts until 2007, tallying over 1,500 episodes across his time with that show. He co-authored the novel "The Ramsays: A Family Divided" with Valda Marshall and wrote for the stage throughout his life. Ray Kolle passed away in Sydney on October 11, 2026, at the age of 85. He leaves behind a legacy woven into the fabric of Australian culture — in the characters audiences loved, the stories that moved them, and the quiet artistry of a writer who gave his life to the craft he chose at ten years old.

Very sad news to hear of the passing of veteran Australian television writer and story editor Ray Kolle. Ray was one of those incredibly talented people working behind the scenes who helped shape some of Australia's most iconic television dramas.
