Randall (“Randy”) Stephen Peterson, of Novato, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, February 10, 2017, at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California, following a heart attack. He was 66 years old. Randy was born in Long Beach on November 22, 1950. He moved to Placentia shortly before high school. Randy received a degree in political science from Occidental College, where he played football and rugby, was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, served on the Board of Governors, and was head resident advisor. Randy went on to earn his MBA from USC in 1975 and worked in credit administration at Bank of America for more than forty years. Randy was an avid outdoorsman, a dedicated sports fan with the rare distinction of supporting both the Warriors and the Dodgers, a competitive board gamer, and an American history buff. He was a wine enthusiast who loved sharing his expertise (and collection) with friends. He could solve any puzzle and fix nearly anything. Randy was active in the Novato community, where he volunteered for many years with the Relay for Life and the San Marin High School Music Department. Randy served as a leader in the Presbyterian Church of Novato for almost 30 years. He was a magnificent husband and father who loved spending time with his family. He was strong, steady, humble, funny, patient, gentle, kind, and always willing to help a friend. We cherish the time we had with him. We are devastated by our loss, but blessed to have had him in our lives. Randy is survived by Sandy, his beloved wife of 41 years; daughters Dana Clausen and Karen Lien; son Alex Peterson; granddaughters Alexa and Elizabeth Clausen and Susannah Lien; sons-in-law David Clausen and Henry Lien; and daughter-in-law Carrie Sumrall. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Alice (“Dolly”) Peterson and his sister, Karen Peterson. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the Presbyterian Church of Novato, 710 Wilson Avenue, Novato, CA. In lieu of flowers, we welcome donations to organizations that were important to Randy: the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Presbyterian Church of Novato.

I was very sorry to find out about Randy's passing. I didn't know him that well--he was older than me by five years--but my mom and dad were partners with Pete and Dolly in a resort called Live Oak Springs. That was way back. I do remember going to Oxy for a football game that Randy was playing in, and along the way Pete (who was a daredevil driver) took a turn too quickly and stripped off his rear bumper. He didn't say a word, just stopped, went back and picked it up, and stowed it in his back seat. Again, very sorry for your loss, and may Randy rest in peace.
