He served during WWII as a Naval Aviation Cadet. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University he worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He then worked as a Sr. Engineer with a national engineering firm and was responsible for the design and supervision of complex construction projects in Alaska, Florida, Washington and New Mexico. Ralph was a resident of Santa Fe since 1959 and started his own engineering firm in the mid 1960’s. His company served numerous municipalities throughout the state and he was a principal consultant for the molybdenum mine in Questa. Ellen Mable Vail (Kaugie)

To the family of Ralph E. Vail, , you are all so fortunate to have had Ruffy in your lives , what a wonderful man. We would always get so excited as children when Grandma would make the announcement that Ruffy and Margret were coming for a visit. To Margret, I am so sincerely sorry that the love of your life has gone, may you find comfort knowing what a wonderful husband and life you two have shared. All my condolences Kaugie.

Please know that Uncle Ruffy and your family are in our thoughts and prayers and we are very sorry for the loss of your loved one. I didn't get to see him often, but I do remember he was always smiling and laughing with a little twinkle in his eye. Please take care.
